I'm not sure if the heading is really coorect. I have a line in my rsnapshot.conf
backup [email protected]:/mnt/rsnapshot/ srv01/
So rsnapshot creates a directors RSNAPSHOT_ROOT/daily.0/srv01/mnt/rsnapshot and puts the backed-up files there. For me, the /mnt/rsnapshot part is unnecessary; I'd rather have my backed-up files directly in RSNAPSHOT_ROOT/daily.0/srv01/. Is there any way to achieve this?
I use rsnapshot to create hourly/daily/weekly/monthly backups of my "work"-share. Now I'm trying to copy the whole backup-directory onto an external drive using rsync.
I used this command/parameters within a screen session (yes, the rsync-exclude.txt lies in the dir I run the command from)
rsync -avzHP --exclude-from 'rsync-exclude.txt' /share/backup/ /share/eSATADisk1/backup/;
The whole thing is running on a QNAP TS-439, the internal drive is a single disk (no RAID) formated EXT4, the external drive is formated EXT3.
What happens is: Rsync follows every hardlink and copies the actual file instead of recreating the updated hardlink on the external drive. I didn't recognize this right away so the external drive ended up trashed with xxx copies of the same files.
What I want to achieve is: Copying the whole file structure generated by rsnapshot to the external drive keeping the hardlinks to save space. Note: This must not necessarily been done using rsync.

Update: I learned, that rsnapshot isn't using symlinks, it's using hardlinks so I now use the -H option which should preserve the hardlink structure acording to Rsnapshot to multiple destinations (or maintain hard links structure) but it still won't work... what am I missing here?
Update 2: I found another opinion/statement on this topic here: rsync with --hard-links freezes Steven Monday suggests not trying to rsync big file structures containing hardlinks, since it soaks up a lot memory an is a hard task for rsync. So probably a better solution would be making an .img of the data structure I'm trying to backup. What do you think?

I have rsnapshot in my cron which backups /etc/ and /usr/local/ and some other files to /backups
Recently I find that when other mashine is down and /backups cannot be mounted rsnapshot backups to physical folder /backups thus it eats partition / space. How can I avoid this?
Can I prevent any writing to /backups when it is not mounted (rsnapshot runs as root, since it need to backup some system files)
I use rsync with great pleasure for backing up my servers, although I do have a question about the --delete-excluded parameter.
/usr/bin/rsync -a --delete --numeric-ids --relative --delete-excluded --rsh=/usr/bin/ssh root@server01:/etc /.snapshot/hourly.0/server01
From man rsync:
--delete-excluded also delete excluded files from dest dirs
To me, a non English native, this means that rsync will delete excluded directories from the actual destination directory on the remote server, so if I have /home/backup and /home/settings in my exclude-folders, those folders would actually be removed from the remote server,.
From several other resources it seems that it will delete the files from the local backup folder in order to save space. For example you can create small back-ups on the server itself and exclude this data, so you won't waste storage space.
It is vital for me though that rsync will do it's job only one-way as people say it's meant to work, I do not want to take any risks in having software that deletes files/directories on the remote server.
We're using rsnapshot for backups. It keeps lots of snapshots of the backuped up file, but it does delete old ones. This is good. However it's taking about 7 hours to do a rm -rf on a massive directory tree. The filesystem is XFS. I'm not sure how many files are there, but it numbers in the millions probably.
Is there anyway to speed it up? Is there any command that does the same as rm -rf and doesn't take hours and hours?
