If I want to allow Windows networked drives between two firewalled computers, do I need to open ports 137-139, or is port 445 sufficient? I have to submit a form and get approval to open firewall ports, and I don't want to ask for more open ports than I need. All of the machines here are Windows XP or later.
Note: when I say "Windows networked drives", I'm not entirely sure whether I'm referring to SMB or CIFS, and I'm not entirely clear on the difference between the two protocols.
By default when I access some computer's share ( typing \\hostname in Windows Explorer ) Windows passes credential of my current user. It prompts for credentials only when current user's credentials are incorrect.
Is there some way to force Windows not to pass current user's credentails, but prompt for them ? I thought about making use of net view command, but it doesn't grab 'user' and 'password' parameters.
I'm running CentOS on a storage server that has to do file sharing for with Windows machines. SMB version is smbd version 3.5.5-68.fc13
I'm getting a lot of error messages in /var/log/messages regarding failed attempts to connect to a CUPS server. They look like this:
Nov 30 18:49:34 big03 smbd[9927]: [2010/11/30 18:49:34.850620, 0] printing/print_cups.c:108(cups_connect)
Nov 30 18:49:34 big03 smbd[9927]: Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost:631 - Connection refused
I understand that the issue is generated by the fact that SMB comes with printer sharing support, but I'm really not interested in that. I just want to disable the feature to get rid of the messages.
Any idea how I can do that?
I was wondering if there is a way of listing all the smb servers on a local network (like looking at a network neighborhood in windows) via the command line in fedora.
Whenever I access windows shares from OSX 10.5 it leaves .DS_Store files on the remote filesystem. What are they used for, and are they necessary, and can they be prevented from being created?
