Questions[slow-connection](server)

I'm seeing some really odd issues with network speeds on my FreeNas 8.0.3 box. Receiving traffic is fine, but sending traffic slows down to 10-50kb/s, and stalls a lot.

I have all other services disabled other than SSH and FTP. It's the issue on any volume I have on the machine. I've tried two different NICs, changed out cables, tried 3 different switches. I upgraded to 8.0.3 from 8.0.1 to see if it fixed this problem and it didn't.

This started happening seemingly out of the blue, any ideas on what may be wrong?

I am running apache2 (2.2) on Ubuntu on a VPS with 768MB of RAM. For some reason it takes several seconds to load any page (even static html). The only component I can blame is Apache. However, I have no idea why it is acting that way. I even installed NewRelic to see if maybe it would help me diagnose the problem in a more visual and friendly format. I see that apache2 is using about 400MB of RAM, which seems like a lot, but the total is still well under 100%. I am still confused as to what the real problem is or how to properly diagnose it.

EDIT: I have seen this problem elsewhere with an ADSL connection and not only USB modems or cell network.

I have my cell network USB modem attached and configured, running under Ubuntu 10.04 The connection is slow in general, although the data flow is good after a connection is established, the problem is it takes too long to actually establish the connections. IP lookups are done super fast so it's not likely the problem at all. I have tried ssh, skype and FTP. There is no problem with any of these.

The problem is mainly seen in HTTP connections, especially with sites with many resources that are gathered from multiple sources, eventually one or two of these resources (image, CSS or JS file) fail to load, the the browser keeps reporting "Waiting for example.com ..." for munites, freezing and keep waiting for this single resource to be loaded. I guess that here could be a clue. I tried browsers other than Firefox: Chrome and Opera and the problem is there as well!

What could be going behind the scenes? Any questions are welcome.

After building my webapp on a first boot i create 2 connections to mysql on debian then 1-2 (r/w) for every page after that. The connection consistently take 5.2 seconds to connect. Debian is in a VM running in my OS. Why is the connection taking this long?

At times it will take < 0.1 seconds which is great but 5.2 x2-3 on every run is to much. Has anyone experience this problem? how do i solve it?

note: I am using .NET to connect. Not that it matters. and its mysql v5

-edit- After checking firewall settings and doing many things i could not figure the problem out. I found a noinstall release of mysql and used that. Connections are lightning fast.

I'm trying to transfer large files (3+ gigs each) across the lan. My connection is 100 megabit to the box, with a gigabit backbone. However, when transfering files between servers and from a server to my local computer, transfer speed hovers around 11 to 13 megabits per second.

Large downloads from the Internet, however, go significantly faster.

I have brought up this problem with my network infrastructure folks, but they insist that everything is fine with the network configuration.

Are there any tools out there that I can install on my computer or the servers to try to isolate the source of the slowdown?
