Questions[uniqueidentifier](server)

I think most of the things have a separate ID and a separate Name in Openstack (Users, Projects, virtual machines, etc). Why don't identity providers have separate IDs and Names? Are there other objects like this? Is there a rule why specific entities must have both IDs and Names while others can live without a separate Name?

I have an HAProxy load balancer that I would like to use to tag requests with a unique id (X-Unique-ID header) so that I can correlate events between logs in multiple systems.

HAProxy has a feature for doing this with the unique-id-format directive. The documentation explains that this uses only the syntax from the logging system and goes on to suggest that you use things like the client and server ip addresses, timestamps, etc to build something that is likely to be unique.

I am wondering if it is possible to generate a random (version 4) UUID (or something similar) for each request rather than generating one with potentially sensitive client information like IP address and request time.

when cloning CentOS (minimal install + nginx, tomcat, postgres all not running) in a VMware virtual environment what unique identifiers are present on the cloned machine?

The information I have found so far is that when cloning, the new MAC address causes an a new interface to be added, so it is necessary to follow instructions here: That is, remove the 70-persistent-net.rules and update the MAC address in /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/ifcfg-eth*

But, is there any other unique properties which may cause problems, or even indicate that the machine is cloned? Is there some sort of System ID created by centos minimal during install.

The ones I can think of are:

• If ssh server creates server creates keys during install these would be duplicated and that could be a security issue.
• Any static IP set up
• The MAC address set up

Would there be any others, even if they would not effect the usage of the cloned machine.

On Linux I can use smartctl to get a hard drive's vendor, model, firmware revision and serial number:

Is the hard drive's serial number (here 6SE1ZCSR0000B121LU63) guaranteed to be globally unique? Is it only unique for a specific vendor? Or even a specific model?

I need a way to identify users that won't change if our e-mail or username naming conventions change; they have in the past. We use LDAP, but our international offices use Active Directory, so I'm a little green here.

I've noticed from a dump that all users have a unique value assigned to uSNCreated. Is this globally unique for a user? Will it change if any of their properties change? Is this my holy grail of unique identifiers for AD?!
