I've been told that the third-party application I need to host on a Windows Server 2022 box needs 3 CPUs with 8 cores but my enterprise cloud provision service (it's in-house at work) specifies computing power in terms of vCPUs.
What's the relationship between a multicore CPU and vCPUs?
I've been paranoid that the websocket feed I was listening to on a t3.micro instance was being inhibited by cpu steal time from other instances under the same hypervisor.
So I switched over to a c5d.large instance and definitely noticed less latency. But now I am curious... where did my CPU credit graph disappear to in the EC2 monitoring section?
Do c5d.large instances not have CPU credits for some reason? If not, why not?
I do have a server with 2 CPUs (22 Cores each plus HT). I created a KVM Guest with 64 allocated cores. When I run a compilation task the virtual machine shows all 64 cores at 100% (at moderate Disk I/O and memory usage) but on the physical machine the guest only uses 14 cores at 100% instead of all the 88 cores randomly (or 64 dedicated cores at 100%). Even if I spawn more compilation tasks this doesn't change. Is there any parameter or setting I have to change to actually use all the computing power that is available?
Currently I have a Hyper-v VPS with 2 (vCPU) processor. I would like to install SQL Server Express 2012 that has a limitation of 1 Socket or 4 Cores, whichever the lesser.
My Question: Are vCPU's counted as a single core, or as sockets? or something completely different?
We've got a KVM host system on Ubuntu 9.10 with a newer Quad-core Xeon CPU with hyperthreading. As detailed on Intel's product page, the processor has 4 cores but 8 threads. /proc/cpuinfo and htop both list 8 processors, though each one states 4 cores in cpuinfo. KVM/QEMU also reports 8 VCPUs available to assign to guests.
My question is when I'm allocating VCPUs to VM guests, should I allocate per-core or per-thread? Since KVM/QEMU reports the server has 8 VCPUs to allocate, should I go ahead and set a guest to use 4 CPUs where I previously would have set it to use 2 (assuming 4 total VCPUs available)? I'd like to get the most possible out of the host hardware without over-allocating.
Update: Chopper3's answer is undoubtedly the right approach. However, I'd still love to hear from any hardware experts out there who could elucidate the performance aspects of threads vs. cores... anyone?
