I want to enable NTFS compression on a specific folder, in my case: C:\inetpub\logs.
This is easily done in Windows Server with Desktop Experience, but in Server Core how this can be achieved?
To be precise I just want the equivalent of checking the box "Compress contents to save disk space".
We just got our dedicated server from Rackspace. It was loaded with W2008 on it. I decided to put the most recent OS on it so I wouldn't have to upgrade it later. Apparently during the installation, I selected the no gui option.
I tried to install the gui from powershell that I've seen reference on other website.
For example:
Install-WindowsFeature Server-GUI-Shell -Restart
When I run this, I get the following error:

I cannot seem to figure out how to get a gui installed on this server.
All references I've seen to installing the gui say to use the Server-GUI-Shell.
Anyone have any suggestions?
How can you convert a Desktop Experience edition of Windows Server 2016 to a Core edition? For previous insider builds you use the powershell uninstall-windowsfeature cmdlet to remove features such as server-gui-shell and server-gui-mgmt-infra to convert a Desktop Experience edition to a Core edition, but these features no longer exist in the RTM version.
Background:
I'd like to start getting some Windows Server 2016 Core VMs up and running. As it is not yet available on MSDN i'm forced to use the evaluation ISO. This works fine in the long term (>180 days) if you want to use Desktop Experience editions, as you can change the evaluation edition to a licensed edition with a product key and dism.exe /online /set-edition:ServerDatacenter /productkey:00000-00000-00000-00000-00000 /accepteula but this wont work with the Core editions of Server 2016 as dism.exe /get-targeteditions doesnt list any options to change it to a non-evaluation edition. So right now i'm forced to either wait a few weeks for it to become available on MSDN, or convert a desktop experience edition to a core edition as i'd need these VMs to work past 180 days.
On Windows Server 2008 R2 core I use dism.exe and the featurename: 'NetFx3-ServerCore' this feature is not available on Server 2012 (Windows Server 8).
Using the standard 3.51 Installer on Server 2012 Core tells me: "You must use the Role Management Tool to install or configure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5"
In the GUI version (of Server 2012) I can do this and it downloads a package from Microsoft.com, but how do I do this on Core?
I have been installing either the Standard or Enterprise versions of Server 2008, but am curious about Server Core. What have you used this for? Did you like it or end up having to upgrade to a more complete version?
