Questions[xorg](server)

I would like to setup a multi-seat configuration using Ubuntu Xenial 16.04.

After some researches, it seems the way to do now is by systemd through "loginctl" calls. (saw here for example).

Before diving too much into into the tutorials because i don't have required materials for now (have only one keyboard at hands), i would like to know if it is possible to achieve a "two seats" setup using only one graphic card having two outputs, HDMI and DVI. It seems two cards are required but i would like to be sure.

I have a RHEL 5 machine here which is a Dell Precision T3500.

I'm an Ubuntu guy, but I'm having a heck of a time with this machine.

After processing its first security update, we cannot log in via the gdm greeter. A new kernel was installed; then I installed the nVidia drivers for our Quadro NVS 295.

I know the X configuration is valid because the gdm greeter does display; however, upon login all we can get is a blank, black screen with a cursor.

I thought perhaps our python installation was corrupted but a reinstall via yum has not helped.

I have searched & googled extensively for a potential fix for this and can find nothing.

Below are outputs from uname, a tail of an error in /var/log/messages, and the Xorg.conf.

Can anyone suggest a course of action?

Update: Switching to the nv driver (which is installed) in xorg.conf resulted in no solution. I don't think that this is an X issue anymore.

Since there is a setroubleshoot error, I'm going to set SELinux to permissive and see if that helps.

Update: That didn't help. Anyone?

Update: Here's a more comprehensive tail of the messages log. You can see I tail'd it then went an logged in to the machine at 10:44, and this output is clearly the problem.

I have a Shell script on a server. The script is run by a particular user, not root.

The script has the following:

export DISPLAY=:8
Xorg $DISPLAY

But there is an error:

Fatal server error: PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server. Perhaps you do not have console ownership?

Can anyone guide me on how to fix this? I've been Googling but there are numerous different answers so I need a bit of guidance.

Edit: I have found this (enter link description here) which suggests changing the /etc/pam.d/xserver file but I don't really know if that's the right thing to do?

I have an application I wish to run on my VPS (a web browser actually, iceweasle or similar) and do not really want to install a full blown X server on there for practical reasons.

I have read I only require an X client (both my server and home computer use Ubuntu 10.06, and my server has xauth and sshd and whatnot set up) to run the programs, although with my own home's server.

How would I be able to do this?

I connect to my host with ssh -X foo@myserver although am completely unsure how to access its xauth, do you know of what I can do?

I may settle installing an x server on there to do a VNC instead.. Although it is just not a good idea as I am only occasionally using it.

One of the good (few) features windows has is it's RDP protocol implementation. This wonder allows me to work with my 2 screen setup in the office, then drive home, open a VPN connection followed by RDP connection to the office PC from home and get my environment exactly as I left it (except from the screen resolution which adapted to my home PC screen hardware).

The above works, and it works great - On Windows. I want the same feature on Linux. I want to be able to open a Gnome / KDE / (other windows manager supports this feature) at the office computer then connect from home and have the displays exported to my current screen.

I've tried several possible work around like having a VNC session constantly open and connecting to it both from work and from home - This works but is no fun (you lose the responsiveness of the "native" application, access to local storage and co.).

Could you suggest a solution? Perhaps some Xorg plugin ?
