I'm using markdown from the repos on Ubuntu 19.10. This seems to be a quite old version:

It doesn't support useful features such as "fenced" code blocks (line are concatenated as if if only kept the last of the opening backticks and the first of the closing backticks).

When I look for a markdown man page on the web there is obviously a more recent (2008) and more complete version (many more options than in my local man page). Where can I find it? Is its source available somewhere? Searching for markdown on the web is near impossible since you get thousands of hits for markdown syntax cheatsheets.

I have a file containing text

**This is bold text** 
*This is italicized text*

I wish to convert the above into

  \textbf{This is bold text}
  \emph{This is italicized text}

using stream editor(sed). Kindly guide me on this matter.

I have used this code

sed -i 's/\*\*\(.*\)\*\*/\\textbf{\1}/g' SampleCode 

and it works like a charm

I have become fed up with writing down markdown tables scratch,
I need some "rich text editor like" program to automate creation of markdown for me and hence of tables.

The only rich text editor I work with is LibreOffice Writer and it doesn't support the .md extension (I guess because markdown is basically plain text).

• I also work with Visual Studio Code, but I assume "rich text like" editing of markdown isn't possible with it.

• A quick google search on Markdown rich editing text like program didn't yield a related result for me.

How could I create markdown documents in a comfortable GUI ("automated") way so the markdown will be written for me?

I've found a plugin to preview markdown in gedit. But I am not sure if it is backdated. Is there any other better option for previewing markdown in gedit?

Is there any text editor with support for Markdown (formatting syntax used by Ask Ubuntu) which can be used to write questions or answers while you are offline?
