We currently host our own domain controller (small company) locally on dedicated h/w. However to mitigate disaster we're considering the use of virtualisation and cloud hosting.
One thought is
Virtual primary domain controller hosted in the cloud + a local (secondary) virtualised server running in the office as a cache?
Is this possible or should I consider something else? We're happy to pay for the decent hosting and DR but this is really out of my experience.

When deploying my application to the Internet:
I was looking around for inexpensive linux/PHP hosting for a project that is still in development. I got some recommendations for slicehost. But then a freind mentioned rackspace cloud servers, and this looked even better. First it's cheaper (assuming I won't have a lot of bandwidth to begin with). Also it seems quite flexible and simple, i.e. being able to backup and clone an entire server, and just turn it off when I'm not using it.
Are there any disadvantages to rackspace cloud hosting versus a VPS like slicehost? How complex is it to setup and manage vs. a VPS?
I have an AWS EC2 AMI in the EU region. I want to move it to the US region. The root device type is EBS and the OS is Linux.
Is it possible to transfer the image to the US region and if so how?
What is the distinction between a Cloud based host and a VPS? I talked to a Rackspace Cloud sales person for around 45 minutes and never came to a real conclusion on this. So, to elaborate on my question a bit -- what benefits might a "cloud" server provide me versus a VPS provider such as Linode and vice versa -- what benefits would a VPS provide over a cloud provider?
From what I've been able to ascertain, when you host on a cloud (with Rackspace Cloud) you get a instance of Linux in which you install software and such (a LAMP, for instance). From what I can figure, if the instance is running, I am charged and the pricing on Rackspace (according to what I understood from the sales rep) comes out to about $20 a month.... I was thinking a cloud customer pays per processing hours -- so if your app just sits there, no charges are incurred. Does one not pay of the cloud instance is shut down, perhaps?
