We had some DNS issues this morning and after they were fixed we were asked to apply
ipconfig /flushdns
To refresh our local caches.
Some people got the changes automatically while others had to apply this. That got me wondering as where in Windows 10 this setting is controlled. Is it server controlled or does each client have it's own rules.
We have a legacy application on a number of client sites. In some cases clients need to have write access to a folder or two under the Program Files (x86) folder.
As time goes on more and more of the clients are enabling UAC on the servers so we are now running into a simple roadblock.
We can apply normal windows/share security, but they still don't have write access. In fact as a local admin I only have that privileges via an elevated program.
Short of changing the program's location (larger task) is there any way I can provide write access to a limited folder to limited users, while the dev effort to alter the program progresses?
I know I can disable the VirtualStore but I'm trying to avoid that.
We are trying to enable a windows login to SQL Server from an untrusted laptop.
So we have a guest on non domain pc non on a domain.

I've done some reseach on the latter message but no links I found talk about our non domain to domain user.
Am I right in thinking that once a user connects to the VPN they impersonate the domain user?
Should I consider these kind of cloud services for off site DR?
We are a small company currently run backup across our servers and then allow dropbox (paid version) to ensure that we have backup's in other locations (US, NZ etc.).
We backup about 10-50 gig a month. Would you professionals consider this a good solution - would you recommend other solutions?
Our local PC backups are per PC but I'd like to add that any solution in the coming weeks.
Please feel free to rip this to shreds, this outside my experience and I want get some ideas for the what we should be considering.
We currently host our own domain controller (small company) locally on dedicated h/w. However to mitigate disaster we're considering the use of virtualisation and cloud hosting.
One thought is
Virtual primary domain controller hosted in the cloud + a local (secondary) virtualised server running in the office as a cache?
Is this possible or should I consider something else? We're happy to pay for the decent hosting and DR but this is really out of my experience.
I have SQL Agent job that is automated that a non SQL Admin user may need to occasionaly run. I know I can trigger a SQL Agent Job via sp_execute_job.
Can anyone tell me where to find what I need installed on a (Non SQL Server box) client PC in order to run one of - SQLCmd, OSQL or ISQL - commands please, so I can execute the above SQL?
I have no issue with what I need to execute in the database, rather the minimum of what I need on the client PC.
Or is there are simpler way perhaps with out calling TSQL or without installing any SQL client tools.
This is a complete new one for me.
We've got a VPN (cert based) running happily on the domain. However after a while of working ok (and usually after I get to home to the other side of town) I find I cannot connect to the VPN anymore.
The following error occurred in the Point to Point Protocol module on port: VPN1-125, UserName: . Negotiation timed out.
Obvioulsy I've googled a bit but I cannot seem to understand what to do. Has anyone come across this issue and resolved it please?
I'm not a sysadmin (we are a three man company) but it's only me it seems to happen to. The other two use windows 7 professsional as client while I use windows 7 ultimate. All the machines are on the domain.
As in the title.
We have a WCF service, and a Windows Phone 7 client. One of our customers wants to install the service behind a TMG server.
I know that TMG is an update to the old ISA server and I recall having to install a client on my PC to connect to a site behind the ISA server, but I cannot see anything about in any of my searches.
Is it actually possible to access the service via this gateway? If so can anyone tell me what I need to do? I'm happy to research it if I know what to look for.
EDIT:
Reading further I see that TMG an do cert based Authentication. So if a trusted cert is installed on the device, this can be connected to the user the in AD. This means that TMG will allow the packet through.
Is my understanding correct?
We have inherited an old .net 1.1 Asp.net application which, in the installation guide, requires UAC (User Account Control) to be switched off.
We have access to the source code but the original developers have long since gone.
Can the panel suggest reasons as to why the application may need this feature of windows switched off please.
One of our test users is reporting that on their test 2k8 system that when they run an elevated Powershell prompt Enable-PSRemoting is returning a 'is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again' message.
They are in the admins group and as I said the prompt is elevated, and the shell is on to the local computer.
Would anyone know of other things to search for please?
I am under the impression that this cannot be done, but would love to know if it can. And if so, why?
