I have been using the "EnableLinkedConnections" registry setting below for years with no trouble. But lately with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, sometimes it doesn't work. I need to run some programs with administrative privileges but they cant see drives mapped as a standard user when this is the case. Does anyone know why this no longer works? Or if there is a work around? Disabling UAC is not an option. Thanks

I am trying to set up a test rack of legacy satellite communications equipment, and part of the configuration requires that I map a network drive on a PC (in this case, it's an IBM eServer xSeries 305 running Windows 2000 Professional), pointing to a device (a very old IP encapsulator) which is running Windows NT.

I know from old documentation that mapping the network drive on a Windows XP machine, pointing to this specific model of Windows NT device (running the identical release of Windows NT), was possible. However, I have no Windows XP machine, and no documentation which would imply that the Windows 2000 configuration would work differently.

When I try to map the drive on the Windows 2000 machine, using the "Map Network Drive" dialog in "My Computer", I get the error "The Remote Computer is not available". If I intentionally attempt to map to a nonexistent IP address, it will instead return "The network path cannot be found."

The two devices are in the same VLAN, and the same network, connected by switchports on a router. On the Windows 2000 PC, I can open a VNC connection to the Windows NT device with no problem.

I've found a handful of troubleshooting steps online which were applicable, but didn't resolve the issue:

1. The "Server" service is running on the Windows NT machine.
2. The target drives and folders are shared with "Everyone" on the Windows NT machine.
3. Enabling or disabling "File and Printer Sharing" on the Windows 2000 machine has no effect.
4. Placing both devices into the same workgroup had no effect.

I understand that this may be too narrow of a problem for this site, so to frame the issue in a broader sense, here's what I'm looking for:

1. Is there any method of mapping a network drive which will generate a more useful/specific error than "The remote computer is not available"?
2. Is there a backwards-compatibility limitation with mapping network drives between different versions of Windows (especially pre- Windows 7)?
3. If there is a backwards-compatibility limitation, can it be overcome?

I appreciate any information to those three broad questions, or any advice about my specific issue which could help me narrow down the problem.

We've got numerous Windows 7 machines that will show a mapped network drive as disconnected on boot up. Seems to be all versions of Windows 7 as well. In the "My Computer" windows the mapped drive is visible, but with a RED X on it. If you double click on it, the red X goes away and displays the contents of that share. I don't believe it's a timeout issue (as mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297684) because this occurs imediately on startup.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 network share setup as a map drive in Win 7 x64. I want to search it via Windows 7 but I always get "no items match your search". It's as though it's not even attempting to search.

The File Server role with Windows Search Service is installed. The drive holding the network share is added to the indexing options on the server, and it indicates that indexing is complete.

From what I understand, the search query should be sent to the server (where the content is indexed), executed, and the results returned.

• create a symbolic link to the UNC. I find that to be an extreme fix to what should be a simple problem.

• enable "Always Available Offline" for the UNC. In a corporate setting it's not acceptable to duplicate all server content locally, nor is it feasible with many TB's of server storage.

• install the "Windows Desktop Search: Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks" http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?DisplayLang=en&FamilyID=f7e981d9-5a3b-4872-a07e-220761e27283 It allows a UNC path to be entered into the indexing options on the client and then the index built locally. However, the add-on is not for Windows 7 and is not supported for x64.

Update:

• The setup includes two clients (Both fully updated Win7 x64), one file server, no domain. Just to make it easy (security isn't an issue in this case), anonymous access is used. I really doubt it's a permissions problem as I can access, modify, and create content on the mapped drive. I just can't search it.

• Searching on the server ALWAYS works. The share in question has lot of content: 2.17TB with 274,633 Files, however, the folder(s) I wish to search has only 11,503 files (54.3GB)

• Searching on one of the two clients works most of the time. It appears to be somewhat unreliable. Some days it works, others it does not. Searching on the second client has never worked.

• The index has been rebuilt on the server as well as both clients.

Update 2:

• From the client, if I highlight all files in the share, go to properties, and let Win 7 count the files, then proceed to do a search after the counting is complete, it works. I'm not sure why that worked (something to do with rebuilding the index, properly this time?). I have a feeling that as the fileserver content changes it wont stay working. Any thoughts?

I have a SQL Server (2000, 2005 and 2008) and I'd like to use SQL Agent (or even a simple backup database 'xxx' to disk = 'yyy'), to backup to remote drives.

I.e: i have a mapped drive in the SQL machine, for example: "M:" which maps to \\otherbox\someshare

By default SQL Server won't allow you to backup to such drives, but I think that there's a way to enable that. Can somebody point me to the docs?
