Questions[nx](server)

What are the features of graphical terminal servers and technologies available for Linux?

• is it open source/free
• how well does it scale
• management (?)
• what's the network usage, susceptibility to latency
• support for session pause/resume
• what client platforms does it support
• support for sound (playback and record)
• directory/local disk sharing
• local printing
• other cons/pros

This question is supposed to be a community wiki for comparison between the different technologies, but it looks like I don't have enough points to make questions into wikis(?)

I am running Ubuntu on a box and have X2GO installed which is working great except copy and paste.

the client is a windows machine (tried 2 windows machines just in case)

everything is up to date.

sound works, things are nice and snappy and I am loving X2GO but no copy and paste is driving me nuts.

I tried NX and copy and paste works (but not sound).

any ideas?

I have an arbitrary application (perhaps several) running on a server, and I want a remote client to be able to connect to the server and use a specific application (and only that application). In the case of multiple clients, each client should get their own copy of the running program.. not a shared screen with the other people.

As far as I can tell, VNC only lets you broadcast the entire screen (e.g. the whole desktop). Is the above requirements something VNC can do, or is another protocol more suited for such a task?

Another constraint is that the server may be Windows, Linux, Mac, and the clients can be any of those three as well.

PS. if you don't have a complete answer, stating your opinion or providing useful links would be greatly appreciated.

I can't seem to find much about how the NX protocol actually works. I have heard it does something with sending X11 commands. But does this mean that the listening clients need to have an x server to run the actual commands and display them?

I run an NX server on my ubuntu work computer and use an NX client on my ubuntu home computer to work from home.

The problem with this set up is that I have to create a new X session whenever I do this-- I can't log into my existing locked session I have running at work.

This requires me to either log off at work before going home if I know I'm going to want to work from home, or, once I've created a new X session at home, going through in process explorer and killing trouble processes from the other X session.

So, is there a way using the NX Client to connect to an existing X session on a computer running NX server?
