In /var/log/kernellog we can see many entries for audit (since we have "space_left_action = SYSLOG" and "write_logs = no"):

...
audit: audit_backlog=32769 > audit_backlog_limit=32768
audit: audit_lost=1 audit_rate_limit=0 audit_backlog_limit=32768
audit: backlog limit exceeded
...

The Question: Could it be that a server crashes/stops if it cannot process the too much audit infos? FS holding kernellog having enough free space.

I have an old SLES 12 SP1 (no GUI) server that I recently patched and when I reboot the server it was just showing me an empty black screen and the mouse pointer. (Tried multiple Ctrl+Alt+F1-F9, and nothing happens)

So I edited Grub and added nomodeset. Now the server gives me the login screen and seems fine.

Then when I enter the username and passwd, the server just shows a cursor and after a while it sort of refreshes and promts for login details again. I've tried so many times, and tried with different users account. It's doesn't even say incorrect passwd etc, it just refreshes the screen. Also some times it will show login timed out before it refreshes the screen.

Any idea on what could cause this issue??

I have a Perl program with tradition (i.e. I use it over 10 years), but today I realized that it cannot find Data::UUID any more. I also tried to install a corresponding package from the SLES software repository, but I could not find one.

AFAIR it still worked in January this year.

I'm using perl-5.18.2-12.23.1.x86_64 from SLES 12 SP5. Could it be a packaging error? It also seems that several "perldelta" manual pages (describing the changes between versions) are missing, so I cannot look up whether the standard distribution had changed.

I also see the same problem in openSUSE Leap 15.3.

We suddenly had a "nobody" issue on NFSv4 mounts on SLES 12.5 machines.

The:

systemctl unmask nfs-idmapd.service
systemctl enable nfs-idmapd.service
systemctl restart nfs-idmapd.service
nfsidmap -c

solved it (+a correct /etc/idmapd.conf), but after a rebooot, we again have to start the idmapd service.

The question: How can we make the idmapd automatically start at boot?

UPDATE:

SERVER:~ # systemctl list-unit-files --type=service nfs-idmapd.service
UNIT FILE          STATE
nfs-idmapd.service static

From https://www.linux.com/training-tutorials/understanding-and-using-systemd/ I can see if a SystemD service is "static" that means it wont start at boot alone, maybe it has some dependency that starts it?

I am trying to troubleshoot the boot issue of Xen virtual guest and I need to access the grub menu. I have attached a console to guest with xl console and in other terminal I have executed a command xl reboot which immediately closed my console. Last thing I see on screen is a guest dmesg message [ 2183.283059] reboot: Restarting system

How can I keep the console connected across reboots?

Host System: SLES 12

Xen: xen-tools-4.5.1_12-2.3.x86_64 (provides xl command), xen-4.5.1_12-2.3.x86_64, xen-libs-4.5.1_12-2.3.x86_64)

Guest System SLES 12 SP1
