Questions[torrent](server)

I have two options here.

one, I purchased a broken D-Link switch,

and two, there is some sort of QOS or firewall related rules that punish my mac pro from connecting to any other device.

I have a D-Link DGS-1510-20 switch with Boot PROM Version 1.00.012 and Firmware version 1.30.B027, hardware version is A1.

I factory reset the switch and didn't touch any configuration.

I use torrents to download some linux dists, gentoo portage and what not, and after a day or so that Utorrent is running on my mac pro, the download rate decreased, I start losing pings to my own LinkSys router and d-link switch and I can't even connect to my Samsung printer that's connected with an ethernet cable to the switch.

once I reboot the switch without saving settings, it all goes back to normal. just closing utorrent and waiting for 10 minutes resolves the issue two.

I have two CoreOS servers that are connected to the switch with 10GB cables and I didn't notice that they suffer from the same symptoms but I don't really use torrents there.

I tried browsing the d-link switch web interface but all relevant rules by default seems to be turned off.

i just want to make sure I'm not missing something. can anyone please enlighten me regarding this issue ?

I'm trying setting up at home an automated torrent client to download some big GIS databases I produce at work and release as .torrent files.

My home server is a Raspberry PI with one Ethernet interface, and the torrent client I choose is Transmission (the lightest in my tests). I connect to my work network through an OpenVPN client configuration.

Since Transmission can't be bounded to an interface but only to an IP, and the OpenVPN configuration (which I do not control) releases a dynamic IP address to each client on every connection, I created a script that launches the VPN on the Raspberry at midnight, reads the assigned IP, closes Transmission and restarts it bounded to this address. Transmission is running 24/7 on the server, so in the morning the same script stops the VPN, closes Transmission an restarts it bounded to the loopback interface, so no torrent traffic is produced but Transmission can still receive notification of new database releases and add them to the download queue (this is done with a daemon).

This works perfectly (the VPN clients sets the new default gateway), but I want to eliminate the hassle of closing and starting Transmission twice a day.

My idea is to setup a virtual interface eth0.1 with static IP and bound it to tun0 so that ALL traffic generated on eth0.1 will go through tun0, and then bound Transmission to the static IP of eth0.1 . This would allow Transmission to be up 24/7, but torrent traffic to be dropped when tun0 is down. When the VPN is up the torrent traffic will go through tun0.

It's the first time I'm dirtying my hands with IPtables as such, so I don't know if this will work nor how to do this, so I'm not asking for a solution but only to be directed to some good tutorials on the matter, since the ones I found were not on the spot...

efw(endian firewall) by default close p2p traffic, to enable that i open all 1024:65535 ports. its work, but it's a bad solution.

i try open 6881:7000 & 2710 also client selected port but it's not working.

is any other better solution?

i have just a few months working as sysadmin, hence i still have lots to learn, first thing id like to do is as follows:

We have an OpenBSD 4.5 box acting like firewall,dns,cache etc, the box has 2 network cards, one conected directly to the internet and the other to our switch, i used to work with sarg for the log analysis but then changed to the much faster free-sa.

I use a daily free-sa report to check the bandwidth usage and report our top 5 bandwidth consumers (3 days a week being #1 and you will be buying the pizzas :D, we are a small company ~20 so we are very familiar). this was working really good until recently, one of us required to download some stuff via torrent (~3GB) and since the pizza rule is active for non-work related downloads, he told me (verified) that his download was indeed work related so i would dismiss that 3GB off his quota, but to my surprise the log didnt showed that 3GB, since his ip consumption was only around 290MB.

More recently, since the FIFA world cup started, we know that some of the employees are watching the match's streaming, we know it and we dont care about it since, like already stated, we are a small company so we dont have restrictive policies, we all can chat, watch youtube, download anything we want BUT we are only allowed 300MB a day otherwise you'll get in the top5-pizza-board, anyway, that streaming consumption is also not showing in the free-sa reports.

So my question is, why is these data being excluded from the reports? im thinking that the free-sa reports list only certain types of things but im also thinking if are the squid logs the ones that are not erm... logging these conections.

Any help, guide, advice or clarification is appreciated.

I read some thing about torrent , that any one can get our ip while download torrents or peer to peer connections.

Is there any way for secure downloading by torrent clients ?
