I'd like to check Lotus Notes as a replacement for Outlook in stand-alone mode, ie. using local files instead of talking to a remote Domino server.

Googling for this didn't return much, and the books I found on Amazon usually just show how to use the Lotus Notes client: Does someone know of a good article that gives the big picture of how Notes works?

IOW, I'd like to know where to go from the 8.5.2 trial EXE that I just downloaded, and how to get a runnning PIM application that I can sync with a smartphone, including contacts, calendar, to-do's, and notes.

I'm a sysadmin with a decade of Windows experience (Server, Exchange, SQL, etc. on networks large and small), and I'm looking to build up my Linux sysadmin skillset.

It seems like most of the tutorials are either for computing neophytes or seasoned Linux sysadmins. I don't need anyone to explain the OSI model, or what a file system does. I don't need instructions burning the installation media to a CD so I can boot with it.

I've got Ubuntu running on Virtualbox, and I'm looking for a tutorial that will walk me through the CLI. I want to know about how services are controlled, how apps get installed/configured, etc. I want to know what's required to get the LAMP stack up and running, securely, on a lean box without a GUI.

Any ideas?

I've found HowtoForge very helpful. Is there any other similar sites that doesn't have too old tutorials which won't work nowadays?

I have been thinking about getting started with monitoring software for a while now, but never seem to get started with it well.

I have heard Nagios is a pretty decent open-source solution for this, but have never been able to properly get started with it.

Does anyone have any tips with some good approaches to getting started on server monitoring? I am thinking of things like number of network connections, load average, maybe bandwidth used by the server, etc. The basics involved, largely (which may include basics that I do not know about).

Is there a good tutorial out there on how to do user and group management in Linux?

For example in Ubuntu; I've been trying to find how to alter GECOS information about each user on command line, but there is no man page about it.
