I am trying to install a program (Microsoft SQL Data Sync Agent), and in one step it is asking me the following:

Enter the account you want to run Windows Service under. E.g. domain\user. localcomputer\localuser. The account must have network access to reach Microsoft SQL Data Sync Service through your network's proxy. User name: "I have to insert something here" password "this is another entry"

I don't quite get what they are asking me for, I guess the user name is the domain\user that they mentioned, but how can I get that information?

I'm setting up a fileserver for our department. It'll be connected to the domain.

I want it to have a very large amount of storage (several TB). Ideally, it should also preserve disk space by identifying identical files and only storing them once. It should be fault tollerant so that if one of the drives fails, that drive can be replaced without losing any data. All of these features are available in Microsoft's consumer offering - Windows Home Server. However, I can't find these kind of features within the enterprise Windows Server 2008 R2. Am I missing something?

I know that I could buy a Drobo, or similar, and use this instead. However, I would prefer to use a built-in feature of Windows Server should it exist.

It seems surprising to me that these features should be available in Home Server but not in an enterprise fileserver.

I have backed up Windows Server 2008 running virtualized on Hyper-V to a Windows Home Server 2008 SP1 (I know I should have backed up the VHD instead).

Now I need to restore the contents of the VM from WHS. I have created a restore CD ISO and used it to create a new VM.

It all works as advertised up to the point where the restore process wants to load the network drivers (it only finds 4 disk drivers on the restore CD. but no network drivers). So I created a virtual floppy and copied the contents of 'Home Server Drivers for Restore onto it. But no luck! I have tried moving the 4 subdirectories into the root of the floppy, but that didn't work either. Finally, I started another instance of the WS 2008 to identify the network driver that the virtualized instance is using (%WINDOWS%\system32\drivers\netvsc60.sys) and copied that file onto the virtual floppy, without success.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get networking working on a Hyper-V instance running off the Windows Home Server Restore CD?

UPDATE: As suggested by delenda, I have added a legacy network adapter to my VM, and indeed I now get a network driver listed! However, the WHS it still not found, even after entering the home server name manually.

I have copied thousands of files of all types into the shared folders on Windows Home Server and marked all of them as "duplicate" (verb) and it appears to be doing well.

However, I have a small number (about 20) .TIF files and it is complaining about each of these files with the following message: "The following files have a conflict. To learn how to resolve the conflict, click Help." The Conflict marked on each file is "The file is open"

These files are untouched and unopened by anything that I have been involved with. So I'm trying to track down why .TIF files are open by something and what that something is or if it's a bug in WHS and if so is there a workaround?
