On Server 2008's Start menu I can select "Log Off", "Lock", "Restart", and "Shut Down"
I wish to remove the "Restart" and "Shut Down" options for all users so that they can't accidentally click on this and are forced to use the manual command options. How do I do this?
I just applied the Patch Tuesday Windows Server 2008r2 patches to a remote server and at the reboot prompt said "yes." The RDP session closed as expected but the sites running on the server continue to function and I can no longer remote into the server.
I have the option to have the hosting company power cycle the server but my fear is that the server is in one of those "don't switch off, currently applying patches" states and a recycle may do serious damage and that's the last I'll see of the server. The server's been in this state for about 2 hours now.
Is there anyway to remotely probe the server to see what it's up to?
I'm trying to edit a registry entry on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server and on all entries when you right click on the name and select modify it allows you to edit the Data field.
One entry, however, has a lot of data and when I try to edit it the dialog shows no data. (In the list view and programatically I can pull the data from the field, however RegEdit does not appear to support the editing of this entry.)
Is there a maximum size for the registry's data item?
(I'm trying to get to the bottom of another problem that I have with this item and establishing the answer to this question is the first step.)
I have a server with an Intel Core i7 processor (4 cores). If I view processor activity in Task Manager I see that there are 8 cores. I believe that this is because of hyperthreading (please correct me if I'm wrong).
SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard will use a maximum of 4 CPUs when compared to SQL Server Enterprise which uses a maximum of 8 CPUs.
My question: Will the standard version of SQL Server fully utilize all available CPUs on this server? i.e. Will it see 4 or 8 CPUs?
When you setup a site on IIS it defaults the worker process to recycle every 1740 minutes (29 hours). Why an odd number like 29 hours and not, for example, 24 or 48 hours?

I manage an IIS7 server and I'm trying to determine what the dynamicCompressionDisableCpuUsage and dynamicCompressionEnableCpuUsage settings on this IIS7 are set to? I have not been able to find anyway to ascertain this information through the IIS7 Manager.
We have a number of legacy domain names that are setup as a site in IIS7. This site then forwards those domain names to the new domain name. The logs of the legacy sites store the name of the legacy domain that had been referenced.
We would like to run a report that shows the raw number of times each of the legacy domains have been hit. We can install new software to capture this info or we can parse the current IIS7 logs to do this.
Any ideas about the easiest approach to get this information?
Previously I was working with Server 2003 and managed to lock myself out of the server (I was accessing it remotely) by enabling the firewall.
I want to remotely enable the firewall on Server 2008 without locking myself out of the server (access via RDP) and then selectively add IP addresses to the firewall to exclude. i.e. block specific IP addresses.
Are there any step by step instructions on how to safely do this?
As part of my job I regularly remote into several Windows 2003 servers. When I do so I save my username and password to speed up this process. However, every 90 days I am required to change my password which means that all these saved RDP sessions need to be reset.
Is there an easy way to change the password on all these "saved" sessions?

Is there a way to blat/remove all these saved sessions so that they need to be recreated?
What reasons would exist for getting this error message when trying to send emails to an email account that I run on a Server 2003 machine?

I have a Windows Server 2003 machine that I'm trying to decommission but my SQL Server team are telling me that there are still calls coming from this machine to the SQL Server machine. I have shut down everything (that I can think of) but apparently I still have something calling out.
How can I trace/find the service/application that's calling out to the SQL Server machine?
I currently have an ASP.NET web app running on a cluster in a data center talking to a SQL Server DB. I need to make this setup redundant with a hot-hot DB in another data center as well as a replicated web cluster.
What architectural options are available to setup this type of fail-over?
I have a several servers in a cluster. One of them is misbehaving and running slowly. I connect to it remotely with PerfMon:
Using the "Add Counters" dialog I select my remote server and in the "Performance object" drop down I see a list of numbers - they look like PIDs. If I connect to any of the other servers in the cluster I see the usual list of performance objects such as processor, server etc.
So why would PerfMon only be seeing ID's on "bad" server and not names? What could be wrong with this server?
I have copied thousands of files of all types into the shared folders on Windows Home Server and marked all of them as "duplicate" (verb) and it appears to be doing well.
However, I have a small number (about 20) .TIF files and it is complaining about each of these files with the following message: "The following files have a conflict. To learn how to resolve the conflict, click Help." The Conflict marked on each file is "The file is open"
These files are untouched and unopened by anything that I have been involved with. So I'm trying to track down why .TIF files are open by something and what that something is or if it's a bug in WHS and if so is there a workaround?
Is there a PowerShell command that will execute a backup of all databases on a server?
Alternatively, can I call a stored proc from PowerShell (that will execute the backup)?
At work I can connect to the Team Foundation Server (TFS) from Visual Studio and do all the source control etc. that I need to. However, when working from home and connected to work via VPN I cannot connect to TFS.
I tried pinging the TFS server from home (over VPN) and from work and in both cases it can see the server. I also tried entering IP address instead of the DNS name and the same story: works from the work computer but not the one at home.
Any idea why this is or how it could be resolved?
I have an old hard disk (Maxtor 250Gb) from about 3 years ago that started giving errors and now sits in a draw in my desk. It has some confidential data on it but it's unlikely that it can be read because the disk started to go bad. However, before I dispose of it I want to make sure that the data can't be recovered by destroying the disk.
What is the best way to destroy the disk such that the data can't be read? (I live in Arizona and was thinking of leaving it in the yard when we have those 125 F days...?)
What is the best way to dispose of the disk after it's destroyed? (I believe that it's environmentally unsound to chuck it in the trash.)
