We have an ASP.NET web app running in IIS, with about 200 users, some are inside our LAN and other ones are outside our LAN. Every user has a userid account and a password to login.
Besides those credentials, we want to add more security for accessing that web app with this requirement:
A user will access that web app just and only from its PC. If the user goes to other place and/or uses other PC, and even if its credential login were right, then he/she will not be able to access that web app.
We have been told that we can partially meet this requirement with client-side certificates. If client-side certificate is stored in the user's PC and IIS is configured to accept client side certificates, then only PCs with client certificate would be able to connect to IIS.
However, would it be possible to tight somehow the user's credential login with the client-side certificate stored in user's PC?
Because a user can go to other PC where a client-side certificate is stored and access web app with its own credential login. We want to make that the user access the web app only from its assigned PC, not from other PC.
In a Windows Server 2003, a asp.net web application needs to convert Word documents to PDF. For that functionality, developers were asking to install MS-Office 2007 in our Windows Server 2003. My boss said no, because installing MS-Office in a server will make it more vulnerable in security issues, and would be worry to keep update with latest patches for MS-Office.
Do you think is that true?
Is it possible to save DOS command prompt history to a file?
I'm going to work in sqlplus and would like to save all commands that were used and executed in a log file.
Example, I would like to save all DOS commads executed in a DOS session:
C:\> sqlplus /nolog
sql> connect / as sysdba
sql> select * from v$version;
etc, etc
I tried to do before: doskey /history >> C:\commands.log
But it does not record anything. I'm in a Windows Server 2008 64 bits.
On my Windows Server 2003 system there is an unknown process that is triggered at 3:30pm (exactly) and stops at 4:30pm (approximately).
In that hour, that unknown process makes more than 6,000 page reads per second and slows considerably that Server. Windows Update is disabled and Antivirus is disabled.
There are 40 client connections that uses a Foxpro program on that server. I suspect that those 40 clients are the ones that trigger that process but my boss thinks that Foxpro program (of which we don't have source code) makes some updates or transfers from Internet at 3:30pm. So, in order to rule out possibilities, I'd like to block Internet access on that server.
Is it possible to block Internet access on a Windows Server 2003 (it's not domain controller) but only accessable in the LAN?
One idea is to block ports 80 and 443 TCP from the IP address of the server in the router, but we had no success doing so.
Another idea is to put off Gateway address and DNS addresses from network card properties. Theoretically, it will not be able to access the internet. But doing that, I'm afraid that it will block LAN connections.
We have an Oracle database in Windows Server 2003, which has its archived redo logs stored on a shared resource of a Windows Server 2008:
\\192.168.1.189\d$\folder_for_archivedlogs
However, according to Oracle's alert.log
, at 10:01 p.m that shared resource got lost and the database was inaccessible. From my Windows Server 2003, on Windows Explorer, I couldn't access that shared resource, but I got a response when I did ping 192.168.1.189
.
I reviewed all the Event Logs on that Windows 2008, but there is no error at 10:00pm or 11:00pm.
Has anyone seen some similar case before? (Shared resources get lost, but you still can ping the server and there are no error events in the Event Logs).
At our office, there is a WSUS server that distributes windows updates to every client PC (Windows 7) between 1:00pm and 2:00pm. The problem is that he PCs become very slow during that time.
Is there any way to accelerate this process?
What should we look to solve this problem?
Could downloading be the problem or could be the update process itself?
I have two Windows Server 2008, Server A and B. Both ones have exact same hardware and same O/S version. However, server A is slower than server B. How do I realize that? For example, if I have to unzip a zip file of 1GB, in server A this task takes double time than in server B.
I can only think that there is some program in server A that makes it slower.
However, if I run "resmon", it shows that server A is consuming 8% of memory and server B 9%.
So, what could be making server A to be slow?
How could I compare what programs have server A and B?
Would be OK for both servers to list installed programs or to list services? Would be there a way to list both things?
I compared services between them, and they have almost the same. Few services in Server A that were not running in Server B, were disabled. Also, I run last Windows updates for both servers.
Still, server A is slower than Server B.
However, comparing taskmanager processes I realized that server A has more processes than B.
Server A has more processes like: cmd.exe, cpqteam.exe, csrss.exe, dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.e , dwm.exe, mmc.exe, wuauclt.exe. Those processes exist in both servers, but A has more of them.
There is one process in server A that does not appear in Server B:
msiexec.exe
Could it mean something?
I'm looking for file pagefile.sys in a Windows Server 2008, and I don't find it in C: drive or D: drive.
On my Folder Options, it's unchecked "Hide protected o/s files".
Does it mean that server is not using that page memory ? And if it needed then that file will be created?
I'm trying to dir a bunch of files with dos command: dir
My dir.bat file:
dir E:\documentos\57\Asiento\01\"Asiento 3 Modificacion de Estatuto.doc"
dir E:\documentos\134\Asiento\01\"File Does Not Exist.doc"
dir E:\documentos\55\Asiento\01\"Asiento 5 Padron de Afiliados Segunda Entrega.doc"
The second one doesn't exist.
Then, when running my bat:
C:\myuser>E:\dir.bat > output.log
I open output.log and don't find any message about the file that was not found.
Output.log :

Is there any way that output.log shows "File Not Found" message?
On Windows Server 2003, is there a way to see if and when a file was deleted?
It's a web server with IIS, our web application let our users to load Word documents into server. However, we found that one Word file is missing, and would like to know is it was deleted or never existed (web app could'nt load it).
EDIT:
I tried to follow this:
Enable auditing the folder you want to keep track of. Just right click on the folder, go to “sharing and security”, then “security” tab, at the bottom click on “advanced”. Select the auditing tab, click add, select the group or users to track, then pick what actions you want to track.
To track file deletion you would enable:
Create files/Write data Success/Fail Create folders / append data Success/Fail Delete Subfolders/Files Success/Fail Delete Suceess/Fail
This one will apply from now on, past actions wouldn't be able to track?
I need to read Imation LTO-3 tapes on a PC, because we have to read too many of them and our server is busy (reading LT03 tapes). What would I need to accomplish that?
Windows Server 2008. It's not a domain controller. My user is in admin group. UAC is disabled.
I'm trying to configure Lock Pages in Memory, but find that button "Add User or Group" is disabled, why could be that?
Edit:
On the Start menu, I clicked Run. In the Open box, typed gpedit.msc. Button is still disabled:
On Windows Server 2003, how to setup that Remote Desktop Connection never expire for one user?
I tried: NET USER /expires:never
But it doesn't work, if I close Remote Desktop Connection and then try to connect again, I got again user and password prompt.
O/S: Windows Server 2003. IIS 6.0. There is no SQL-Server.
I'm looking for filtering all events that have this Exception message: "Connection request timed out". Would it be possible?
O/S: Windows Server 2003. I'm not network manager but was asked to find out how many fibre channel ports has that server. Is it the same as Fibre Channel Adapter shown in Device Manager of Windows?
Is there two fibre channel ports?
IIS 6.0 with Windows Server 2003. We have bot attack or scanning (low to medium) to our IIS server. Reading IIS logs, we realize that one IP loads our web page in the way shown in the picture:
We can block that IP on the firewall, but I'm wondering if it's possible to block on IIS by behaviour or pattern, for example, blocking some IP due it's accessing one web page 4 times in a second, and continuously for 5 hours?
I've got two (2) nodes in an Oracle RAC 11g in Windows Server 2008. Oracle software is installed in C:\app.
I realized that the ORACLE_HOME path has not been set.. In System Properties-> Advanced -> Environment Variables, I see that ORACLE_HOME is empty, and I need it in order to run some Oracle patch.
I've got installed a VisualSVN in a Windows Server 2003 (it has just a drive C: with 10GB)
I'm planning to backup a VisualSVN server in this way:
In case of disaster recovery, in order to restore server, I would only need to:
My question are:
Thanks
