Newbie question, sorry - I've been googling 'start automatically on reboot ubuntu' and the like, but I'm not sure I've found the definitive answer.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and I would like to make sure that heartbeat starts automatically whenever the server reboots.

Currently I am running the following manually:

$ /etc/init.d/heartbeat start

How can I make sure this is called whenever the server restarts?

One answer I googled suggested:

$ update-rc.d heartbeat defaults

would do the trick - is that correct?

I'm trying to do some heartbeat debugging.

Is there a simple way to ask a machine whether it thinks it's part of a cluster, and whether it's the master or the slave?

I've tried

$ heartbeat -s

But it only seems to print a very basic status - running with process ID, or not running.

I'm trying to start heartbeat on Ubuntu 10.04 with service heartbeat start, but getting the following errors:

heartbeat[24829]: 2011/11/22_19:31:07 ERROR: Bad nodename in /etc/ha.d//haresources [node1]
heartbeat[24829]: 2011/11/22_19:31:07 ERROR: Configuration error, heartbeat not started.

On on server uname -n produces loadb1, on the second server uname -n produces loadb2. The two servers can ping each other okay with those names.

This is /etc/ha.d/ha.cnf on both servers:

What am I doing wrong?

The part where I'm least clear is the ucast/bcast lines.

I have two load-balancing servers running mod_proxy_balancer. Each server balances between two web servers.

Now I'd like to find a way to share a single IP address between those two load-balancing servers, in a way that will fail over.

Is it possible to use just heartbeat (without ldirectord) to share an IP address, with mod_proxy_balancer?

If so, could someone point me at some instructions, or suggest the way to proceed?

All the heartbeat tutorials I've seen assume that you're using ldirectord, or pacemaker (which I can't use because of restrictions on my cloud servers).

I'm trying to begin load balancing on an ElasticHosts cloud server, and their system doesn't allow the user of VRRP.

Does anyone know of any non-VRRP load balancers that are pre-packaged for standard Debian/Ubuntu?

I've tried the non-VRRP UltraMonkey, but the software looks like it's getting old and it's no longer packaged nicely - the last release was for Debian Sarge.

Advice gratefully received.

I'd like to disable directory indexing on Apache.

This is my .htaccess file in full. But as soon as I uncomment Options -Indexes the server falls over.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm pretty new to sysadmin, and I'm trying to install the UltraMonkey load-balancer on Debian 6.0 - Squeeze.

The installation instructions for Debian Sarge say to edit sources.list:

deb http://www.ultramonkey.org/download/3/ sarge main
deb-src http://www.ultramonkey.org/download/3 sarge main

I tried this, but when I do apt-get install ultramonkey I get Unable to locate package ultramonkey.

I then tried editing the sources to:

deb http://www.ultramonkey.org/download/3/ squeeze main
deb-src http://www.ultramonkey.org/download/3 squeeze main

But still the same issue.

Does anyone know how to adapt this for Squeeze, or is the answer basically 'You can't install UltraMonkey on Squeeze'?
