I thought changing the password with 'encfsctl passwd path/to/encrypted' would change all filenames. But it didn't work. Any ideas why?
I got this, so the password was changed correctly:

I want to block all non-vpn traffic, for which I have a script with iptables rules that works fine. The problem is that I can only set those rules after being connected to the vpn (if I do it before, I can't connect to the vpn). The connection to the vpn happens when I login, because that's how the network manager works (each user can handle its own connections).
So how do I auto-execute a script as root, after I'm logged in and connected to the vpn? I might need this even for non sudoer users
I have different tunnels that I configured using the network manager GUI.
When I login to my desktop, I'm connected to the internet without any tunnels. To connect to a tunnel, I usually click on the network manager tray icon > VPN connections > Some VPN
I need that done automatically on startup, so I need to know how to do that in the cli.
It would also be nice if I could make sure that no application connects to the internet before the connection is tunneled.
Any ideas?
I'm using Ubuntu 12 and openvpn.
The home is mounted unencrypted on login.
I tried accessing it after doing 'su sampleuser', but it was encrypted, which is the expected behavior I guess.
I also tried changing the user's password, and then logging in, but I was redirected to the login.
So just to be sure: is there a way for root to access and decrypt a home folder from another user?
I have moved to Ubuntu 12 and chosen to use full disk encryption (encrypted LVM).
So now I'm wondering: should I shred (eg: with secure-delete package, srm) the free disk space to remove any remnant windows might have left?
Is free disk space treated any different?
When I open vim for a file like /etc/nginx/sites-available/default, syntax highlighting works fine. But then if I create my own file /etc/nginx/sites-available/myapp, vim does not highlight its syntax. I have to do :setf conf every time.
Is there anything I can put in ~/.vimrc to tell vim "if you don't know which syntax to use, just use conf" ?
A .vimrc template for a vim noob is also welcome. I'm not using it as an IDE, I use vim mostly for config files only.
Note: I'm using Ubuntu 12, in case it matters.
I need the command 'rails' to be added permanently to the PATH variable. I'm not sure if this should be happening automatically, as every rails guide seem to assume doing 'rails something' will work right after installing it. The same happened with other programs, so I think I'm the problem.
I searched this but I found many options, not sure which is the most appropriate way:
option 1) edit ~/.bashrc
option 2) edit ~/.profile
option 3) put a script into /etc/profile.d/
I haven't tried them yet, I don't want to make a mess in the system.
Any suggestions?
ps. I'm on Ubuntu 11 server edition 64 bits
My final choice: I used ~/.bashrc for the sake of simplicity, I only needed to open a new terminal after adding the path
I'm used to put them in /var/www or /home/www with a symlynk to /var/www when using apache. Not sure why, but I read that it was a security matter.
Is that the place for nginx websites too?
