I'm looking at allowing internet access for only a few scattered users on a school network. One method I'm considering is using 802.1x authentication for the modem. Of course there are simpler options like only allowing specific IP or mac addresses, but policy requires something more secure than this.
So, are there any modems with 802.1x wired authentication? All my searching on this yields info about wireless.
Basically, I'm looking for something like Windirstat that works well on the command line and is easy to distribute over a network.
I've tried sysinternals du (can't exclude/include file types), diruse (limited like du), cygwin du (too slow). I've also tried all the graphical tools I can find, and none have a command line interface.
Any hidden gem I'm missing?
I have a network of 50+ PCs, with a Dynalink RTA 1320 for internet access, and have issues with internet speed. The Dynalink connects with a PPPoA connection.
Only about 20 actually have internet access (the rest have the gateway manually removed...), and of course they aren't actually accessing the internet all the time. There are internet slowness issues though, and I suspect the Dynalink is balking, it being a consumer grade modem/router.
So I've been looking into a business grade modem/router, but my googlefoo seems to be failing me. I've heard of Zyxel before, but what are some other alternatives?
Update: I went with the Draytek recommendation, and it has been very solid.
I have a windows program deployed using WPKG that runs hidden to the user, and may need to reboot sometimes. In order to prevent the user from losing work, I would like a dialog box with a message, giving the logged in user the option to delay the shutdown for a bit. This is something similar to the way Automatic Update does it.
I've looked at a multitude of shutdown utilities which give the user a message, but none which give them a little control to delay the shutdown.
