We have several network interfaces in a machine. How to configure SNMP view to limit which interfaces could be shown to public community?
We're using Ubuntu Server and default SNMPD from the repository. We have successfully limit the SNMPD agent to show only interfaces tree using this configuration:
view system included .iso.org.dod.internet.mgmt.mib-2.interfaces

We are planning to attach a local SAS disk to a VM, so the VM can access the disk directly. We're using VMware ESXi 4.
I have heard that this can be done with SAN LUNs. But how about local disks?
Our storage controller is HP SmartArray P400.
Update: I tried adding the disk, bur the Raw Device Mapping option is greyed out. Are there any other way?
Our MySQL database servers host several dozens of databases, with dump file size ranging from 1 to ~100 MB.
Currently, our backup approach is mysqldump, wrapped in a shell script, and run from a crontab. This has worked great for us. The only main drawback is large storage requirement to store the dump files.
Since MySQL database dump is a text file, naturally I consider storing it in a version control system, such as Subversion. I recall Subversion only store the delta of a file in each commit.
Is this approach recommended? Are there some gotchas we should aware of?

We have moved mysql data directory to another disk, so now /var/lib/mysql is just a mount point to another partition. We set the owner of the /var/lib/mysql directory to mysql.mysql.
But everytime we mount the partition, the ownership changes to root.root. Because of this, we couldn't create additional MySQL database.
Our fstab entry:
/dev/mapper/db-db /var/lib/mysql ext3 relatime 0 2
How to change the owner of mount point to user other than root?

We are currently evaluating two free bare-metal virtualization product: VMware ESXi 4.0 and Citrix XenServer 5.5. While both look good on the reviews, we are curious about their licensing.
A quick glance at XenServer Installation Guide (published June 2009), I found that we have to acquire free license on annual basis. This raises a concern, what will happen if Citrix decide to stop releasing license.
Quoting from the document:
Q: The XenServer license has expired. What is going to happen?
A: If the license on a XenServer host expires or goes beyond its activation date while the system is still running, all active virtual machines continue to run as long as the host system is not disrupted. However, new VMs cannot be launched. If the host system is then disrupted (through a power failure, system restart, and so on), a Citrix Essentials for XenServer system will reverts to Citrix XenServer-level functionality when its host is restarted.
Do you think we should continue evaluating XenServer, or drop it in favor of ESXi?
EDIT: We tested further by setting the system clock on the host one year ahead. After that, we cannot boot all the VMs. So it's not Essentials license that expired, but the XenServer itself.
What is the best way to share common web application code to many web servers?
For example, I have a directory containing web application written in PHP. Now, I have multiple machines that will serve same content, each runs a webserver, load balanced using TCP/IP balancer.
I haven't tried NFS yet for this scenario. But according to Slow NFS transfer performance of small files, transfer performance will be slow, because of many [small] files involved.
EDIT: I want to store all files centrally in a single location, so update to the code will be instaneously read by the webservers.
I'm using Openfiler 2.3 on an HP ML370 G5, Smart Array P400, SAS disks combined using RAID 1+0.
I set up an NFS share from ext3 partition using Openfiler's web based configuration, and I succeeded to mount the share from another host. Both host are connected using dedicated gigabit link.
Simple benchmark using dd:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=outfile bs=1000 count=2000000
2000000+0 records in
2000000+0 records out
2000000000 bytes (2.0 GB) copied, 34.4737 s, 58.0 MB/s
I see it can achieve moderate transfer speed (58.0 MB/s).
But if I copy a directory containing many small files (.php and .jpg, around 1-4 kB per file) of total size ~300 MB, the cp process ends in about 10 minutes.
Is NFS not suitable for small file transfer like above case? Or is there some parameters that must be adjusted?

What is OpenSolaris standard naming for Ethernet devices?
I'm planning to use ZFS on my system (HP ML370 G5, Smart Array P400, 8 SAS disk). I want ZFS to manage all disks individually, so it can utilize better scheduling (i.e. I want to use software RAID feature in ZFS).
The problem is, I can't find a way to disable RAID feature on the RAID controller. Right now, the controller aggregates all of the disks into one big RAID-5 volume. So ZFS can't see individual disk.
Is there any way to acomplish this setup?
