How do you automate the deployment of software and configuration (users etc) on tablets?

The context is a number of Linx and Surface tablets that will be sent out to sites where they will be put on a LAN without internet access. We don't need or want remote management or AD, we just want to do one-time setup. And then later potentially reformat/reinstall any units that are returned as faulty.

Previously, for regular PCs, we've made sysprepped disk images using volume license keys for Windows 7, but you can't physically pull and reimage disks on tablets and we haven't arranged any Win10 volume license keys. We would like to continue using the licenses that ship with the tablets.

I'm familiar with exim and the behaviour of exim -bt in indicating how a message will be routed. I'm trying to set up a trivial sendmail configuration to route root mail on a local system to my company email address.

# tail /etc/aliases

# Person who should get root's mail
root:       [email protected]

Having run newaliases, this currently works properly. But I can't understand how to verify that locally with -bt.

I have a NFS server and a group of systems that involves about 50 machines using it for home directories. I have an intermittent bug where all the files at the top level of my home directory get deleted. How on earth can I track down what's causing this?

root_squash is on. Therefore I suspect a rogue cron job running under my user ID. Is there an easy way to track what file accesses and deletions come from what system, without heavily loading the server being monitored?

Switches are supposed to only send traffic to a system if it's intended for that system. Ours appears not to: if I run "tcpdump not host myhostname", I can see lots of packets that are clearly non-broadcast (ssh, nfs) travelling between other hosts. How can I prevent this? I think it may be causing poor performance (we have heavy NFS use; if it's coming out of all the switch ports, that can't be good).

The switch is a stack of three Netgear GS748TS managed switches. The switch activity lights all flash in sync continuously, which seems wrong too.
