This should be an easy one for some of you guys with DC and AD experience.

I am introducing a new DC running 2008R2 to replace a DC I have running 2003. I have run through all the set up and I have the new 2008R2 (DC-04) running alongside the existing 2003 domain controller (DC-03), I also have another 2003 DC (DC-02) which I am leaving alone.

Since I have this DC-04 up and running with 2008R2, I was planning on shutting down DC-03, and renaming DC-04 to DC-03 so it replaces it. After some research it seems this may cause some issues since the DC-03 name already exists in my system.

What is the best course of action here, is there a good way to clear out all references to DC-03 and then rename DC-04 to DC-03?

Or is it better to just demote DC-03, shut it down, and leave DC-04 with the name it has now? Will computers in my domain know to look to DC-04?

This question is related to a previous one I asked regarding backing up Domain Controllers and RODC's. Basically I am making some changes in regards to the DC's in my network. I am looking to add a writable 2008R2 DC as well as a 2008R2 RODC to my domain.

I have created a writable 2008R2 DC called "DC-04", it is set up and appears to be working fine with one exception. When I run dcdiag /v on this new domain controller, I get an error during the FRS event test. This error corresponds to Event 13508 that I am getting and it states:

"The File Replication Service is having trouble enabling Replication from DC-02 to DC-04 for c:\windows\sysvol\domain using the DNS name dc-02.domain.com. FRS will keep retrying."

Some information that may be helpful:

DC-02 is running 2003R2 x86, it also holds all 5 FSMO roles

There is another DC called DC-03 also running 2003R2 x86, no errors come up on DC-04 regarding replication from this DC

All DC's are Global Catalogs and have DNS

I can ping dc-02.domain.com from dc-04, so DNS seems ok

FRS service is running on DC-02

Any ideas or things to check would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to convert a DC from a 2003 DC to a 2008 RODC. Before I can do that, I must have a writable 2008 DC in my domain. I have a Windows 2003R2 x86 DC that I would like to upgrade to Windows Server 2008R2 x64. What is the best way to back this up before doing so, just to be safe. Also what is the best way to back up my other 2003 DC before upgrading it to a 2008 RODC?

If the DC is a virtual machine, would taking a copy of the .VHD file be helpful?

I have two users experiencing this problem and I've gone through all the possible fixes I can find with no luck. I'm hoping someone has another idea. Here is the info to clarify the problem.

2 users recently got new laptops (Windows 7) and both noticed the problem only after getting the new laptops.

When they remote desktop to any servers on our network, the copy/paste clipboard functionality won't work between the local and remote session, but only sporadically. Sometimes it will actually work.

When using a remote desktop connection to something outside our network, the clipboard functionality works fine.

Here's what I've tried:

• restarting rdpclip on the remote session
• checking that the clipboard is selected and local drives are selected in the RDP options under local resources
• server side is fine as other users have no problem with clipboard functionality on these same servers
• New laptops for these users are in the same AD organizational unit as the rest of our office

Any Ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I want practically all of my AD users in my organization to change their password the next time they log in. I have roughly 160 users. I would also like to not include a few select members. Is there a quick way to do this rather than going through AD and checking the box for each user one at a time?

I have a server that hosts about 20 virtual machines. The VM's all use Windows XP. When you log in to any of them after booting them up, it will take about 3-5 minutes to log you in and freeze up on "Applying Computer Settings". If you just log out and log back in however, it will log you in quickly as if your info is stored somewhere. I believe this is an issue with Group Policy settings being applied and taking a while for some reason. I looked at the USERENV.log but it is filled with symbols and is illegible (This is another issue, any ideas about that?) I think that log could be helpful if I could get it to work.

Is it as simple as selecting a language while installing the OS? Download a language pack through Windows Updates? Do I need a specific download for Windows in German?

I've never dealt with foreign language OS's so this may be a bit of a simple question.

We have a scheduled task that runs every night and copies a file of around 70-80gb from one server to another on our network. For some reason it has been taking ~8 hours to do this, which is a problem because it doesn't finish before our nightly backup tape operation runs and this file doesn't make it to the tape.

Any suggestions to make this run quicker?
