I'm trying to fix an already install openNMS system on ubuntu. Currently I'm facing issue with postgresql. I stop server using this commnad:

service postgresql -$PGVERSION stop

after that when i run command:

ps ax | grep postgres

Now I dont know how to end all these process. also when i run top command... i can see long list of postgresql processes. this is a production server so i can't reboot it. Please let me know how can i get rid of it.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and I'm trying to install sun jdk for opennms.

 sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk

when i run above given command i get following msg:

I have a simple script that gives me some values from a file. I am using sed to get that vaules (syntax is given below). these commands were working fine till yesterday. but now I'm not getting any value when i run these command. I've not changed anything so I'm quite surprized that what is reason. can anyone please tell me how can i debug my problem? below is file text:

I've written a udev rule like this:

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ACTION=="add", RUN+="//root/usbmon/usb add %b"
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ACTION=="remove", RUN+="//root/usbmon/usb remove %b"

now this usb script sends email whenever usb is attached and removed.

but problem is that every-time it sends 2 emails. it means rule is executing 2 times. this is what i get in log

I dont know why it is executing 2 times and how i can stop it to work once? I have verified that issue is at udev end but dont know how to fix it. this is output of udev monitor when usb is attached:

Now above output clearly shows that udev is attaching device again after 10 seconds and that is time when i get email again (after 10 seconds). also when script is not executable then i get following message 2 times in log file:

now I want to know that i need to change these settings to make udev run once. i have verified same thing on 2 server. CentOS and ubuntu.

I'm using following script from my windows machine to run on linux and do backup.

@ECHO off
:: run remote command
plink.exe username@myserver /home/username/do-backup.sh

Problem with this script is that, i have to keep my session live. as backup takes 30 minutes or so , so I want to know if there is any way I run this script and after that backup command keeps working even if i turn off my system. or you can say that i execute my batch file it goes to server, execute script on server and then comes back while backup script keeps running on server.

I have an rsync script that runs on one Linux server to synchronize files with another Linux server. Is there a way to launch a script on one of the Linux machines without actually opening an interactive ssh session to the server?

I want a bash script to monitor USB ports of a linux server to detect when an external hard drive is plugged in and removed.

When a USB external drive is plugged in or removed, a text file is generated in some temp file about usb drive specs and time.

I have to design a program to monitor USB ports of a linux server to detect when an external hard drive is plugged in and removed.

Now I have one confusion in my mind about it. I have my own VPS. so if i design a program then how can i check it without physically plugging external drive as i'm working on vps. does it mean that there is no other way except that I install OS on my own computer at home and then plugin hard drive myself and check it?

actually I have to develop this program for 3 different OS thats why I'm asking.

I'm trying to use mysql for RoR on windows 7. for that I install mysql gem as follow.

Now after that when i try to add mysql to gem list then i get following error:

I can see that mysql gem is there in gem folder but gem is not allowing me to add it to gem file. any comments/help please.?

I installed perl using following command:

curl -L http://xrl.us/installperlnix | bash

after that i run following command to create soft link

ln -sf /usr/local/bin/perl /usr/bin/perl

now I'm trying to run commands like dir, mkdir, ll, rm, vi but nothing seems to be working for me. also when i try to login into my shell i get following msg at startup:

Don't know if perl was already installed or not. and now i can't check.

I am uploading data from a hosting server to an FTP server. There are many folders inside the main folder that I'm trying to send via FTP. put/wput won't work for me because they only handle individual files. I am now trying lftp but I am getting the following issue:

lftp -e "mirror -R /root/temp/mail  /mail1" -u user,pass dest_ip
Getting directory contents (0) [Making data connection...]

It stays at "Making data connection..." but meanwhile it creates the mail folder on my FTP server.

How can I upload all of my folders and files to the FTP server?

I have a web hosted on a sever where i have created an ftp user. now i m trying to access that ftp from a vps but when i give password it says me authentication faild.

I am trying to install mod_security from source. when i run ./configure I get this error:

configure: error: libxml2 is required

After that error, I executed this command:

yum install libxml2

It installed libxml2 properly. However, I'm still getting the same error from ./configure. How can I resolve this error?

How can I block all access to a PHP file? File name is similar to sm6######.php where #### can be any random digit.

How can I do it using mod_sec?
