I have a SQL Server 2008 database that I need to bring into my environment, but my production servers are all running SQL Server 2005. Upgrading the environment is not an option, at least not in the near term.
I do, however, have non-production SQL Server 2008 boxes to use if they can help out during the conversion.
The database is 1GB in size.
How do I handle this conversion?

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2850, with an old PERC 4 controller. In the installation wizard (using the latest Dell Server Assistant DVD), I run into a snag when trying to target my disk drive. It sees the array, but says that it cannot install there.
Any ideas how to get around this? I would like to be able to re-purpose these dinosaurs if at all possible.

user -> internet -> our fw -> nginx -> haproxy -> web farm
During normal operation, nginx receives the HTTP request, does its thing, and hands off the request to an haproxy instance that is bound to the loopback address (127.0.0.1) on that same box.
In order to do some troubleshooting the other day, I moved the haproxy instance onto the same interface that nginx was running on. This immediately added 100ms of latency to all requests. This interface is not a true physical interface, but a carp interface.
Can anyone explain to me why this was the case? Contention with the packet queue maybe? Or perhaps loopback is always faster because it is 'soft'? There is something fundamental that I'm missing here, and I'm hoping someone will kindly educate me.
We've decided that we want to experiment and limit requests per minute instead of requests per second on our sites. However, I am confused by the burst parameter in this context.
I am under the impression that when you use the 'nodelay' flag, the rate limiting facility acts like a token bucket instead of a leaky bucket. That being the case, the bucket size is equal to the burst parameter, and every time that you violate the policy (say 1 req/s), you have to put a token in the bucket. Once the bucket is full (being equal to the burst setting), you are given a 503 error page.
I am also under the impression that once a violator stops going against the policy, a token is removed from the bucket at a rate of 1 token/s allowing him to regain access to the site.
Assuming that I have the above correct, my question is what happens when I start regulating access per minute? If we chose 60 requests per minute, at what rate does the token bucket replenish?
Our web servers are running IIS 7 and are configured to compress dynamic and static content. When I hit these servers directly, gzip compression works.
I recently placed nginx in front of them, and gzip compression has stopped. I was able to work around this by explicitly enabling gzip compression on nginx itself, but that seems a little inefficient considering I have half a dozen backends and only one active nginx box.
It appears that nginx is stripping out the Accept-Encoding header. Does anyone have any advice for how to 'correct' this behavior?

I have implemented rate limiting with Nginx (which works excellently, by the way) and would like to display a custom 503 error page.
I have followed examples on the web without luck.
I am running a simple configuration that looks something like this:

The idea is that our rate limited users would be shown a special page explaining what was going on. The rate limiting is working, but the built-in 503 page is rendering.
Any ideas?
I recently moved a hard drive from a Dell Optiplex 760 mini-tower to a 760 small form factor. All seemed OK until I attempted to remote desktop into it and recieved a blue screen of death stating that:
The driver is mismanaging system PTEs.
The STOP information:
STOP: 0xDA ( 0x400, 0xFFFFFADF2A6CC000, 0x200, 0x0)
The OS is Windows XP x64 SP2. Has anyone seen this?
I've been very impressed with agent-based / SaaS-like monitoring services such as Scout and Server Density. They both provide very nice trending, alerting, and reporting capabilities for my *nix boxes, and I need to find something similar for Windows.
Can anyone out there recommend such a tool?
It is important that this tool is a centralized service in line with the aforementioned products, as the deployment environment is owned by a lean team with limited resources.

I was working with mercurial tonight on Apple's OS X (10.5), and received this error message while attempting to clone from a repository over SSL:
Python support for SSL and HTTPS is not installed
Any ideas as to how I go about fixing this?
Let us say we own the zone mywebservice.com.
I would like each of my customers to get their own subdomain, such as customer.mywebservice.com.
customer.mywebservice.com needs to be a CNAME to a given server offsite. Since that site manages its own equipment and can change addresses at any point in time, the CNAME is a requirement.
People also need to be able to send email to [email protected], which would require a simple MX record.
However, and this is where I'd like some guidance:
According to RFC 1034:
If a CNAME RR is present at a node, no other data should be
present; this ensures that the data for a canonical name and its aliases
cannot be different.
I have also verified that my DNS server will refuse to serve up anything but a CNAME for hosts that use them.
So, it seems that I may have a losing situation. If I want to use the MX record, I need to use an A instead of a CNAME.
Can anyone think of any workarounds? Thanks!
