Does anyone know if the so-called ``management'' features of the NetGear GS108E switch require external software to enable these features? Specifically, the port monitoring and VLAN features. One reference I found says it is built into the switch, another says not. The download section on NetGear's site offers a Windows software download.
I ask here since the ProSafe switches are aimed at business customers.
I am using tinydns behind dnscache to resolve machine names on a LAN, as installed on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Every so often without explanation, local names can no longer be resolved by any machine on the network. It seems that tinydns is no longer responding. Rebooting the server sometimes helps, however that is not how I run Unix servers. Killing tinydns also seems to work sometimes, but not always.
My overall experience trying to run a local DNS server has not been good, with careful tweaking of resolv.conf files and seemingly random failures of tinydns. If others have problems with djbdns, please let me know. DNS diagnostic tips are also helpful.
Update:
A quick check of the logs shows complaints about I/O failure, followed by a complaint about not being able to bond to the given address. Sometimes nothing is reported in the logs, the app simply stops responding.
Just a note on the setup, which had its own problems. The dnscache was run on eth0 at one IP address, and tinydns was initially run on eth0:0 on another IP address. (Setting up tinydns at 127.0.0.1 did not work at all, even though djb says that it should.) However, this setup (eth0:0) did not work on reboot, since Ubuntu has some problem starting eth0:0 automatically. Changing the alias to eth0:1 allowed the interface to come up automatically on reboot. this is more adventure than expected for a seemingly simple task.
For now, I am trying tinydns on a completely separate server, and will report back if that is stable.
Is there software for Linux to use an SSD as disk cache? I believe that Sun does something like this with ZFS, though not sure. A quick search provides nothing suitable. The goal would be to put frequently requested files on the SSD on-the-fly. Since the SSD has more capacity than RAM for less money and better performance than hard disk, this should provide an efficient performance boost.
The ISP hosting a mostly static web site complains when certain users start to hammer the site at around 30 hits/second. The machine slows to a crawl, apparently. The files can be simple pages with a few graphics, to fairly large files. There are other sites hosted on the server, so this is not good news.
Should Apache be able to take this load? Are there tips that the ISP can use to tune the server for this? Is there anything to tweak on the pages themselves?
Is it possible to use the system passwd file for accessing a protected web page with Apache on Linux? Setting up multiple password files for shell access, Apache and Samba is a pain. If there is a mod for that, it would be handy to know.
The SVN annotate feature is quite powerful and makes quick work of who to track down for a particular feature on a particular line of code. This feature is rendered slightly more limited (but still useful) if users access SVN via http. There are no credentials exchanged this way so the annotation shows no name for a line modified by by a developer who uses http to commit a change.
The question is, is there a way for a developer to pass credentials of some sort to SVN on the server to uniquely identify their commit? It is merely the presence of an ID that is required in this environment. Alternate methods such as svn+ssh and file protocols are not available. Finally, this server is on an internal LAN, not public. Tips for https also welcome.
