I have OS X server set up as a directory server with portable home directories. I'd like to guarantee the 3-4 client Macs all have the same applications and versions installed without having to manually install everything. All I can find is documentation on how to set up the update server.
Do I need to get Remote Desktop 3 to be able to do what I want?
I have a VMWare ESXi server with the RCLI appliance installed. I was wondering if it was possible for the RCLI host to mount the filesystem of another guest. I'm assuming there's some way for it to mount the vmfs (as I understand it, at least) where all the guest vmdk's (?) live.
I was looking for something like VMDKMounter.app on VMWare Fusion. So I went looking for what mount.* commands were available and I found /sbin/mount.vmhgfs.
What is vmhgfs?
Is it vmfs by a different name?
Will it let me mount vmdk's with an ext3 filesystem, assuming I could get the right mount point set up?
I can see the console via the VMware Infrastructure client.
I can start a VNC server on the server itself, but that leaves me without any X desktop magic.
I want to connect a VNC client to connect to the console, instead of starting up my Windows VM to run the VI client.
Is it possible to connect directly? My google fu is not helping me on this one.

At our office, we have a local area network with a purely internal DNS setup, on which clients all named as whatever.lan. I also have a VMware environment, and on the virtual-machine-only network, I name the virtual machines whatever.vm.
Currently, this network for the virtual machines isn't reachable from our local area network, but we're setting up a production network to migrate these virtual machines to, which will be reachable from the LAN. As a result, we're trying to settle on a convention for the domain suffix/TLD we apply to the guests on this new network we're setting up, but we can't come up with a good one, given that .vm, .local and .lan all have existing connotations in our environment.
So, what's the best practice in this situation? Is there a list of TLDs or domain names somewhere that's safe to use for a purely internal network?
What tools are available for allocating and tracking which addresses are being used? Specifically, our issue is that sometimes an IP is taken for a VM and when we go to build new ones they're not necessarily up for the quick 'n dirty "ping test".
Right now there's a Google Spreadsheet, but inevitably we forget to update it.
It has to be shared and easy to update.
Should I just bite the bullet and go with a DHCP server?
We have a brand new Dell 28-something-or-other that is running bare metal VMWare ESXi 3. I'm getting conflicting information on whether there's a command line console for things lke creating new VMs, etc.
I want to be able to automate (preferably with Ruby) creation, deletion, configuration, booting, etc of Linux (Ubuntu) guests.
I already have the deployment process automated, once the machine is up, I just need to tie the VM provisioning into it, ideally as a poolparty remoter.
