Since Windows Explorer (since at least Windows XP) has some basic support for ZIP files, it seems like there should be a command-line equivalent, but I can't seem to find any sign of one.
Does Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 2003, 2008, 2013) ship with a built-in command-line zip tool, or do I need to stick with third-party tools?
(I know this is a slightly silly question, but...)
I've recently been made aware of "find" and "findstr", despite having been doing at least light admin on Windows XP since it came out. I was surprised, to say the least, to discover that somehow these commands never managed to hove into my field of view before yesterday.
(Exact quote: "wow, I guess I didn't have to keep downloading grep ports after all.")
On the other hand, better late then never, right?
Anyway, and I'mm just curious, how long have those two been built into Windows? If it was new in XP I'll only feel slightly stupid, but I could have been using those back in my DOS 5.0 days I'm really going to feel like a doofus.
Inspired by my previous question here, I've been experimenting with PSExec.
The goal is to trip off some fairly simple scripts / programs on one WindowsXP machine from another, and as PowerShell 2 doesn't yet do remoting on XP, PSexec seems like it'll solve my problems nicely.
However, I can't get anything but the "Access is Denied" error.
Here's what I've tried so far:
I've got a pair of WindowsXP MCE machines, networked together in a workgroup without a server or domain controller.
I've turned off "simple file sharing" on both machines.
Under the security policy, Network Access: Sharing and Security model for local accounts is set to Classic, not Guest for both machines.
There is an Administrative user for each computer that I know the passwords to. :)
With all that, a command like "> psexec \\otherComputer -u adminUser cmd" prompts for the password (like it should) and then exits with:
Couldn't access otherComputer:
Access is denied.
So, at this point I turn to the community. What step am I missing here?
PowerShell 2.0 has some super-snazzy remoting features. However, I'm unclear if they can be made to work with / between Windows XP machines, or if you need Windows Vista or Windows 7.
Here's what I have:
A pair of Windows XP MCE machines with SP3 installed, along with .NET 3.5.
PowerShell 2.0 CTP3 is installed on both.
WS-Management v1.1 installed on both (as 2.0 doesn't seem to work on Windows XP?)
With all that in place, the "Enable-PSRemoting" still nets me this error:
Enable-PSSessionConfiguration : Windows PowerShell remoting features are not enabled or not supported on this machine. This may be because you do not have the correct version of WS-Management installed or this version of Windows does not support remoting currently.
Ordinarily, my response at this point would be to say "well, I guess it's time to download the Windows 7 RC," but I've seen enough vague comments about people remoting in and out of Windows XP to make me think this is possible.
How can I get this to work?
Does it work? Is it worth using? Any gotchas I should be aware of? Is it "enterprise grade"?
I just stumbled across it today. If it works as advertised, this would solve quite a few issues for me. Mostly, I need something like this to keep files synced between a mobile device and a desktop PC - the simplest case would be keeping a digital camera and c:\photos\ synced up.
So, is this worth using?
I've spent a fair amount of time using various *nix systems, but don't have a lot of experience in setting them up from scratch (unlike Windows, which I can more or less do in my sleep at this point, much to my dismay - I keep waking up and discovering I've set up a new box. Anyway.)
Looking to shore up this hole in my education, I've been playing around with getting a linux machine up and running on my home LAN of late. (Using Fedora 10 due to some advice I got out in meatspace.) While the install went fine, its that first batch of configuration that has me somewhat puzzled. The usual combo of google and sweat has got the thing more or less working, but are they any decent tutorials out there for someone who kinda knows what they're doing in the big picture, but doesn't know what to do with his Linux box on day 2?
