I am having this error for quite some time

I am using CentOS 5.3 on which I have a LAMP and a Qmail Server

This also serves for a samba share and ntp server for my intranet

The problem is that the Box suddenly freezes and the other lights in my keyboard (other than Num Lock which is usually ON) starts to flicker

This happens randomly and there is no specific application or command that instigates this

When I am on the GNOME terminal, it feels like a total freeze as i cannot move on to the command line consoles also

Other times, when I leave the machine at say tty1 and it freezes, I see the line as Kernel Panic there

The box is updated with the most current updates using yum

I would like to receive instructions as to how to clear the problems and if required procedures to trace out this activity and find a remedy for this problem

Sometime ago I managed to erase the /var/lib/rpm folder which basically contains information about all the rpms in the System

The problem posed is that I cannot query nor Upgrade using the yum

I did the steps mentioned like rpm --rebuild and ll that but it did not help

Its my pure curiosity to know of a method by which we can restore the database of the installed rpm's

I say curiosity, because the server runs fine without it also !!!

Hope no one does this anytime ... I lost many days sleep for this

I have a CentOS 5.2 i386 Production box with Qmail, LAMP etc

now since it showed me that it could upgrade to 5.3, i downloaded all the packages using yum update

However, the update fails due to perl packages conflicting

I believe that while installing Qmail, I had tried for Mailscanner and thus it upgraded the per itself

I read somewhere that we can uninstall the conflicting rpms and then go for the upgrade

But, I am about 50 % sure that if I go ahead and uninstall perl, my server will crash like a falling house of cards

Also, perl is needed by variety of packages working including vpopmail etc

Thus, I request anyone to please tell me if we have a safer solution to this

IF there is no solution to this, then can somebody please teach me how to backup and restore Qmail as it is. I can handle the rest of the things

I sincerely appreciate those who have read and even thought about my problem
