I'm having trouble figuring out yum, rpm, and exim4.

All I want to do is

yum install exim4

yum has been good to me in the past, smoothly fetching all packages and dependencies required to run the program I desire.

But not this time. exim4 wasn't included in the amzn-main package apparently.

amzn-main/latest
amzn-updates/latest
No package exim4 available.

Now I don't want any fish. I want to learn how to use the dadgam yum fishing rod.

• I don't know where to get the command to install exim4 via yum.
• I don't know how to expand the places my Linux instance is looking (besides just amzn-main) to actually find the exim4 yum package
  • I don't know whether it is safe to look in other places for packages for my ec2 instance other than amzn-main

I have a bunch of UDP datagrams reaching my server that look like so:

The question is, my IP is not 208.69.57.21, (it was 208.69.57.101) so how are those datagrams even being received/logged by my tcpdump?

Also, what kind of attack is this formally called? I don't think it is DOS.

Subnet mask is usually something like 255.255.255.0. And until now, its the field I usually ignore.

I am trying to read the wikipedia entry, but its pretty loaded with jargon.

Can anyone explain in simple terms what a subnet mask is for and how it works?

I'm having difficulty selecting the correct UPS for my home configuration.

I have 2 machines I'd like to keep online. We have been having daily power failures (2-4 seconds) and I think that can't be good for the H/W.

So I got a cheap Ultra UPS but it turns out this was completely the wrong choice for 2 systems that have 500 W PSU's each. I'm not sure what I expected, but I didn't expect the UPS to just shut off.

The nominal load for my systems should be around 130 W, and if the GPU is working hard then it could get as high as 400W.

Still I know the rules - I should have gotten at least a 1200W UPS.

So, now is this 250W UPS utterly useless?

I thought the [L] flag indicated that "this rule should be the last rule processed for this http request.."

However when I have 2 rules like:

RewriteRule ^test$ php/test.php [L]
RewriteRule (.*) error.php

What always happens is requests to http://localhost/test go to error.php, not to test.php as I expected, since I put the [L] there. If you comment out the second rule there, then requests to http://localhost/test go to test.php as expected.

What I'm really trying to do is catch 404 errors with mod_rewrite. Its possible what I'm trying to do is just plain wrong. But I still want to know why the catch-all rule is active since I did put an [L] after the ^test rule.

I see a large listing in here where the server admin lists a bunch of paths that begin with the recognized directories, but I wanted to avoid doing this by simply using a nice catch-all rule.

I just clean installed Apache 2.2.17 and PHP 5.3.4. For Apache selected Win32 installer, for PHP I selected x86 VC6 Thread Safe due to this, and I put Apache in C:\web\Apache2.2, and PHP in C:\web\libraries\PHP.

The thing is every time I try to hit a PHP page on localhost, I get this entry in my log files:

DocumentRoot is C:\web\htdocs, and it works fine for normal .html files (it works!). But it seems Apache is redirecting all requests for .php pages.. to a subfolder called /web of htdocs. I don't get it.

All the PHP installer did was in httpd.conf:

ScriptAlias /php/ "C:/web/libraries/php/"
Action application/x-httpd-php "C:/web/libraries/php/php-cgi.exe"

And mime.types:

application/x-httpd-php php
application/x-httpd-php-source  phps

I have a vague notion but I'm not clear on the difference between local domains and "relay domains"

I believe that local domains are "localhost" and any other aliases you set the server up to mean "self".

I believe "relay" domains are "everything else?" Like if a DNS has foobar.com point to this server, then foobar.com is a relay domain? I am not sure about this point.

In the exim setup file - (exim4.template.conf) What does it mean "fallback MX or mail gateway for domains" - what is fallback mx? Does it mean your server is like a DNS server of sorts?

Regarding this exim /etc/aliases man page

I am not sure how /etc/aliases works. The

/etc/aliases
   The file should contain lins of the form
   name: address, address, ...

I looked in /usr/share/doc/exim4-base/spec.txt.gz, but all I want is an example of the format of the aliases.

Is it

root:  [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

Where root is the login username on the Linux system, and the aliases that trail after it are (email addresses that go to root's inbox)

Or is it

root:  bobjoe, Robbiejoe

Where the domain name is left out.. so the alias file doesn't care about domain..??

And so how can you route [email protected] to the root user?

When I start Mutt, the default mailbox is whatever is in the $MAIL environment variable.

How can I startup Mutt, pointing to a different mailbox rather than $MAIL, or better still, how can I change the current mailbox from within Mutt?

I have a clue as to using a .muttrc file. Is there an example of a .muttrc which can open multiple inboxes?

Using BASH, you can get the last command (when connected through a PuTty terminal) using the UP arrow key.

I want to know if there's a way to "autocomplete" the last command I did starting with mail, for example.

In Google Chrome, for instance, the way the address bar works, by narrowing down from your previous web history the site you are trying to visit.

So what I want to do is start to type "mail", then press the UP key for example, and the last command starting with mail gets autocompleted. If I press up again, then the 2nd last command starting with mail get autocompleted.

Is this possible in BASH?

I almost have installed citadel on ubuntu 8.04. First I added

deb http://debian.citadel.org/ubuntu/ hardy main

to my /etc/apt/sources.list

Then I ran

apt-get update

Then I ran the apt-get install citadel-suite command. Interestingly, I get this problem:

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libsieve2-1_2.2.6-1_i386.deb (--unpack):
 trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/libsieve.so.1', which is also in package libmailutils1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/libsieve2-1_2.2.6-1_i386.deb

So it appears that libmailutils1 already created a file /usr/lib/libsieve.so.1, and now libsieve can't install.

How can I get around this?

I want to understand what's going on with this Exim configuration directory.

In /etc/exim4, there's:

* exim4.conf.template
* update-exim4.conf.conf
* conf.d

The conf.d has a mess of directories and files, and inside each are a bunch of if statements which I find really different.

For example:

• why are there so many if statements in these configuration files?

Say I want to find all files that mention "Jonathan Appleseed" in a Linux system.

I see examples using grep, but I can't quite grep yet how to search (all directories from HERE). So I want to look in everything below /var/, for example

So, I've just set up mail and mutt and I'm happily sending emails to a gmail.com address.

I am using EXIM as my MTA.

Now, when I reply to those emails (so they get send back to my domain) I see a record that they appeared in /var/spool/mail, but cat doesn't seem like a very clever way to read it.

How do I properly read mail that is sent to me at my server? How can I set up additional email addresses like [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

I installed mailx

apt-get install mailx

But a command like

mail -s "Hello world" [email protected]

Is actually giving an error in /var/spool/mail/ which says:

Mailing to remote domains not supported.

Why is that happening?

What happens if you have 2 DNS entries:

Does this mean that smtp requests to example.com will map to 20.20.20.20, and somehow request in the headers mail.example.com? What?

On Windows, there's the shutdown cmd line, but is there a windows command line command to call a "standby"?

What I'd really like is to call something like standby -force to force a system to enter standby even when a pesky app is trying to prevent it.

I followed this example to set up a git repository on my server. It worked, and I successfully pushed my code to it.

But now, how do I pull or clone?

Using the docs, I tried

git clone http://REMOTE_SERVER/home/git/example.git

.. But for me, I'm getting:

fatal: http://myserverip/home/git/example.git/info/refs not found: did you run git update-server-info on the server?

I ran git-update-server info, but nothing changed

Ah, hold on. I changed it to git clone ssh://REMOTE_SERVER/home/git/example.git and I'm getting something.. it wants my user/pass, but how do I make the server public then not requiring login?

I have my gameServer.py script running remotely through PuTTy.

gameServer.py looks like this:

while True :
  (( listen for packets ))
  (( send all packets to all clients ))

WHEN I execute the script normally:

./gameServer.py

It works perfectly but the terminal is tied up. Naturally quitting PuTTy terminates my script.

I want to be able to close PuTTY and just have this script run perpetually so I tried:

./gameServer.py &

But that actually does not work and I don't understand why. First of all its not receiving or sending any packets when run in that & mode, second of all it will go "+ Stopped" whenever I type enter or ANYTHING into the console.
