I am using munin to track overall system resource usage so I know that there was a peak last night. The problem is that I miss a tool to find out what processes were running at the time so I have no way to analyze it further. For that purpose I have installed psacct package on my centos 6.3 machine so that next time a peak occurs I can find out the cause.

The package psacct looked good for that purpose but after installing it I am not sure how to print processes executed in a certain time range. Is there a way to do it? Or should I pick some other tool/package to get the past information about processes (launch/completion time and ideally their system usage).

Now that I think of it, I can also log output of top every minute or so. That would probably serve the purpose but maybe there is a better way.

php-fpm workers are taking large amount of memory even if there has been zero traffic on the server for some time. What is this memory? Is it leaked memory (magento is on that pool) or is it some sort of php cache (I use just APC cache which should be in a shared memory somewhere though)?

EDIT: I know I am overcommiting my resources a lot here and I have already fixed that but I still wonder what this memory is and why php-fpm does not release it.

At work we have a machine to which root password has been lost. I have pulled out the disk and mounted it to another computer. Now I think the next step should be editing root password in the shadow file.

But the disk I have pulled out is actually a disk1 from raid1 (mirrored) array. Is it safe to modify data on one of the disks from the array like this? If not, how should I proceed?

And if you could also answer this: what is a good way to manually generate the hash to put into the shadow file (is it md5 or something else?).

Is it possible to make apache not dependant on log existance?

If there is a log file that cannot be opened, apache quits after restart or even reload. Quite an unplesant behaviour because one needs to be super careful when manipulating vhosts on production server. Does it need to be this way? Interesting is that if there is just a syntax error in a vhost reloading apache does not quit it.

Example:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/httpd reload

From logs:

[Thu Jan 10 19:25:02 2013] [notice] SIGHUP received.  Attempting to restart
(2)No such file or directory: httpd: could not open error log file /var/www/patron/logs/error_log.
Unable to open logs

And apache is not running anymore :(.

I am transfering crontabs from an old server (centos 5.5) to a a new (centos 6.0) and there is a problem with (the most important) user apache. On the new server I am getting the following:

root@newserver $ crontab -u apache -e

Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info
You (apache) are not allowed to access to (crontab) because of pam configuration.

How can I overcome this?
