Should server's run their own firewalls (Windows Firewall, Linux IPTables), or is it simply not worth it? Is the answer different for 5 servers vs 50 vs 500? (Assuming the prior has servers on the same network as workstations, the larger have seperate server lans).

Right now we have this configuration working, however if a board member goes to http://extranet.domain.com and logs in, they get a access denied page, but http://extranet.domain.com/board works. The same for the stakeholders.
Do I need to migrate data out of the 'home' tab, and give everyone access to it so they can nagivate to these sub-tabs? Is there not a way to simply 'kick' a user to their tabs they have access to?
Has anyone successfully used SCSI mapping to present a SCSI tape drive to a VM for backup purposes? My servers do not support VMDirectIO (VT-d), so I can't present the PCI device to the VM, and my Adaptec 39160 is not supported in ESXi4. Before I spend $300 on a replacement card -- I want to be sure others have even found it possible to do this.
We have a COTS (commercial off the shelf) application that is changing its database schema enough to make existing queries return invalid data. Think "select * from cars where cartype='car'", but now we've added trucks in too .. so you need to do "select * fro mcars where cartype='car' and subtype='car'" to get the actual car results (ignore the insanity of this .. it makes more sense in the obscure actual instance).
Is there a way to audit all SQL statements executed by a given sql server login?
Is there a SQL Server "proxy" that can do this, or other inline modifications (progmatically replace a table with a view)?

We are looking to capture queries such that I can match them against a rules engine (ie, a perl script) looking for the lack of the second parameter.
ie.. "if a query INCLUDES "cartype" but not "subtype" email me an alert"

Is this the answer for the SMB that wants relaible servers? Assuming we have a SAN, two compatible servers, and the cash for the VMWare licenses -- is there any downside to VMware FT? Why wouldn't everyone be running FT?
How well do traditional operating systems stack up quantitatively (no gut feelings) against proprietary hardware in terms of performance, reliability, and maintainability for a storage system.
Specifically what are the pros/con's of Windows Storage Server, FreeNas, etc and JBOD running off a real hardware RAID controller compared with something such as HP Lefthand, Dell Equallogic, or a baby EMC SAN.
Are there benchmarks comparing WSS or a software platform with 8/16/32 spindles against a similarly equipped 'real' SAN?
Please also categorize your response in terms of a small install (one or two chassis 8 - 64 drive set) or a large install (one or two racks of drives 64+ spindles). I assume with a two rack's of drives system, the TCO management costs eclipse any savings from using white boxes.
I have a Compaq DL380 G4 running an ILO on a shared ethernet port, so I only have SSH access. On this machine I have VMWare vSphere 4. I can ssh into the ILO, issue remcons, and see the lovely VMWare management screen that offers to give me a management console if I was to issue the "alt-f1" command.

However -- I can't seem to figure out how to issue an ALT-F1 over the SSH connection. I found various resources that mention there is a hot key for alt, such as ESC key key (to send ALT-key), however I can't seem to find the magic key combination to send "ALT-F1" over SSH to this ILO.
Any thoughts?

When using Veritas Backup Exec and selecting System State as a backup item, what exactly is backed up? Veritas seems to refer you to Microsoft, and Microsoft tends to be equally vague about what this backup includes.
If I have a server running nothing except Windows 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server, and was to lose the machine entirely, what would I recover if I restored from a system state backup? Would the machine be usable? Would it contain any non-OS data?
Does System-State include Active Directory settings (on a domain controller, what would be restored)?
Also, please provide a verifiable reference (via URL)
