We have created two batch files which set two lots of folder permissions. T:\folder1 level1 all get read only permissions. T:\folder1\subfolder1 level2 all get change permissions. The batch files we have created work fine and get through to H in the folder list at level1 and then simply bomb out without any explanation. Is there a buffer that is getting filled or something we need to extend to make this work? Client machines running the command are Vista 64bit 12GB RAM. At level1 there are approx 3,000 folders. Total amount of data that the command runs against about 600GB. File quits out after processing around 20,000 files. Any ideas?

We have the following layout

•Shared Folder "Clients"

•Level 1 ("Client A"/"ClientB"/"Client C"/etc)

•Level 2 ("Folder 1"/"Folder 2"/"Folder 3"/"Folder4")

•Level 3 ("Word Docs / Spreadsheets / Raw Data / etc")

Users have a mapped drive and access the folders as follows: Clients on server T:\Client A\Folder 1\Word Doc1.doc Each Client folder has 4 sub folders at level 2 as shown above.

The problem we have is users are accidentally saving/moving/deleting folders at Level 1 and Level 2.

We have a group called Admin Staff who are the users who create the folders at Level 1 and Level 2 when a new client is added onto the system. These users need to create / delete / ammend all details at all levels.

All other users for example Domain Users must not be able to make any changes to Level 1 or Level 2 folders. However they must be able to work within the various folders at Level 3. At level 3 the users can create their own sub folder structure if they like and we are happy for all users to have read/write/modify at this level.

What is the best way to configure network permissions to achieve this task to prevent users moving folders by mistake or deleting client folders.

I work for a hosting company, where we offer colocation services.

Since we offer colocation for client hardware which we don't own, a lot of the client devices don't have an IPMI module to allow for a remote reboot. As a result, when one of these machines crashes, we get a call to reboot it, which we do by physically accessing the power button.

This is inconvenient, obviously, especially outside of business hours, when we don't have anyone on-site and have to come into the office to reboot a computer. I know that on servers from OEMs like HP and Dell and IBM, you get an out-of-band-management interface which provides essentially the same functionality as physical access would.

Is this kind of hardware available independent of the an OEM-specific model? I'm thinking of something like a PCI card (for example) that I could plug into any brand of computer to give me IPMI or remote power-cycling functionality, but that's just off the top of my head.

What hardware is typically used to do this?

I am trying to automate the installation of Windows Vista 64bit on my network.

I have WDS setup and working fine and can deploy images across the network. At present I manually select the settings for both phases of the vista installation but it works okay.

I have followed the following article to try and create two unattend files and have set them up exactly as per the article with UK settings. However the unattend files seem to be getting ignored despite being configured on the server properties and image properties where you would normally do so. The guide shows how to create answer files using WSIM for x86 computers. The only thing that springs to mind is that I could probably do with an x64 unattend file instead. However if I follow the instructions through I dont have any x64 options in WSIM (without AMD or wow in front of it).

What do i need to do in the unattend xml files to tell it to work for x64 instead of x86?!?

I have two Windows 2008 Standard servers running DFSR okay. I can create a file on one server and it is replicated to the other okay, etc. I have the namespace shared folder on each server shared with Full Control for Administrators and Modify permissions for Everyone.

  1. I then browse to the folder on server 1, e.g. \\server1\namespace\share\folder1.

  2. I right-click the folder and configure the NTFS permissions as I would like them to be. For example Administrators Full Control, one user Read/Write access, and no other users in the user list.

  3. I save this and then double-check the second server, e.g. \\server2\namespace\share\folder1.

  4. I right-click the same folder name as before and can see the NTFS permissions have replicated accordingly.

  5. I right-click the folder and go to Properties > Security > Advanced > Effective Permissions and select a user that shouldn't be able to get into that folder, e.g. testuser. It agrees with the NTFS permissions and shows that testuser has no ticks next to any permissions and so should be denied access.

  6. I logon to any network PC or the server as testuser. I browse to \\server1\namespace\share\folder1. It lets me straight in, no access denied messages. The same applies to server2.

It seems as though all my NTFS permissions are being ignored. I have one DFS share and then all the subfolders are a mixture of private folders and public folders so I need the NTFS permissions to work like they usually do. Any idea whats going on? Is this normal? From my tests all users can access any DFSR folder under the namespace\share which is quite worrying.

I have a Windows 2003 SBS server running on a DL380 with 2 LAN cards as follows: 192.168.2.2 = LAN 100mb / 192.168.10.1 = copy subnet 1000mb

I have a Windows 2008 standard server running on another DL380 with 2 LAN cards as follows: 192.168.2.3 = LAN 100mb / 192.168.10.2 = copy subnet 1000mb

When copying files between the servers via \192.168.10.1 copy / paste, the server defaults to using the other 100mb nics and is slow at copying large amounts of data. How can i force the server to make use of the crossover cable and copy subnet that ive set up?

Ive got a large amount of data to copy before the morning so any help would be good.

Please note i dont have physical access to the servers right now only ILO and RDP
