Apart from regular backups, there is some data that I want to archive (e.g., old projects that aren't needed anymore).
I wonder if there is any benefit to using WORM media instead of regular tapes (apart from the inability to accidently overwrite it)? There is no legal/regulatory need for WORM, but I can't find real info whether those tapes are more/less/equally reliable than regular ones.
This is for LTO tapes.
I'm about to setup a backup using an LTO-4 Drive. I know that drives are meant to be compatible to any tape within the past 3 generations (so I should be able to read an LTO-4 tape using an LTO-4, 5 or 6 drive).
I wonder if this also applies to hardware compression and hardware encryption?
Is it safe in practice to rely on the ability of any LTO-4/5/6 drive to read my backup tapes?
I have a single Windows Server 2016 Standard Server, with 3x 4 TB drives, on plain SATA Controllers (2x On-Board Intel, 1x Add-On PCI Express Asmedia 1061). The server itself is virtualized, running on a Windows Server 2016 Standard in Hyper-V, with the disks being physically attached to the VM in Hyper-V.
I could create a regular RAID-5 Volume in Computer Management, which has been supported for several Windows Server versions (Back to Server 2000 or at least Server 2003?)
However, the big new Storage Feature since Server 2012 has been Storage Spaces, which offers Parity.
However, I haven't been able to find much information about why I would use Storage Spaces Parity over a regular RAID-5 Volume in a 3-disk/single parity setup. I've seen some discussion about more disks and using multiple redundancy (instead of just protecting against a single disk failure), and I've seen tons of discussion about Storage Spaces Direct (which seems to be the only thing anyone on Server 2016 seems to talk about).
Has anyone done any actual experience with Storage Spaces over regular RAID-5 Volumes and could advice which one would be a better option?
(Better, as in: If a drive dies, I just want to replace it and rebuild automatically, and if I have to move two working drives to another Windows 2016 server for data recovery, it just works.)
I have a bunch of Windows Servers and Clients in a VM Lab, and I'd like to simplify Update Management. Currently, I need to run Windows Update on each and every machine, downloading the updates.
I know that with WSUS, I can create a central cache, but it seems that I have to select the updates beforehand. That seems to be a ~250 GB download for Windows 2012 R2, 2016, 10 and 8.1. Also, if I wanted Office, SharePoint or SQL Server, I would have to download them as well.
What I'm really looking for is to basically run Windows Update (incl. Updates for other Microsoft products like Office, SQL Server, etc.) on each machine as-is, but whenever a new package is discovered, cache it. So when other machines need it, they would just grab it from the cache.
That way, if I decide to e.g. install Office 2013 on a machine, I don't want to go back into WSUS, select Office 2013, synchronize. But rather, I just want to run Windows Update on that target machine, see that it needs a bunch of updates for Office 2013, download them, cache them, and then the next machine like that just grabs them from the cache.
Is that possible? Either with WSUS or some other software like that. I don't care about having to approve upgrades, I'm not really looking for Update Management, just for caching.
Looking at setting up a SOHO server with a C236 Chipset and ECC RAM and wondering about the CPU to use.
Skylake Pentiums (e.g., the G4400) support ECC, but prior to Kaby Lake's release, news outlets reported that ECC support was removed.
Looking at Intel's ARK for e.g., the Pentium G4600, ECC is listed as supported, but ARK has been wrong before.
Does anyone know for sure if the Kaby Lake Pentiums support ECC RAM?
I have a Mac Pro on which I want to install Server Core (2012 R2 or 2016). The problem is that the Ethernet drivers need to be forced.
On a GUI System, I'd open device manager, select "Update Driver", "Browse my computer", "Let me pick" and then choose the Intel 82574L network adapter, and everything works fine.
Can I do this from the command line? I've seen a bunch of results about using pnputil to add the driver to the driver store, but that doesn't seem to apply - the driver is already part of windows (E1Q62x64.inf on Windows 2016), it just doesn't get automatically detected even though the device id matches (0x8060 Vendor, 0x10F6 Device).

IIS recycles an ASP.net Application Pool automatically whenever either the /bin folder or the web.config file changes.
Is there a way to disable that feature? This is IIS 7.5 running in Integrated mode, and the underlying intention is to allow applications (with Full Trust) to update and restart themselves.
So IIS likes to shut down app pools that aren't in use. While this makes sense, I would like to have certain app pools conterminously running, but I don't want to just disable the automatic app pool restart as some of the settings (e.g., maximum memory limit) are good to have.
I know that Microsoft announced the IIS Application Warmup module as an IIS 7.5 feature only then to do a Bait & Switch and pull it again so that they can put it in IIS 8 instead, so I wonder if something exists to run on IIS 7.5/Windows 2008 R2?

Is there a way to get specific information from IIS which rule is eventually denying me?
Edit: I was able to fix this using the IIS7 management console by going to the very root (my machine) and clicking "Edit Configuration" and unlocking the section there. Still I'd like to know if there is a better way since I can't find the file it actually modifies.
I have a bunch of Windows Servers that run a bunch of apps, that log into local text files.
I want to aggregate these text files into a centralized log server, where I can search them. Building something like that is trivial, but before reinventing the wheel I wonder if there is already something?
Would rsyslog help? Is there even a Windows Version of it?

Windows Server 2003 and 2008 have the Shutdown Event Tracker, which seems useful in theory to track why a machine was shutdown.
But in reality, I found that most IT Teams have a whole change process anyway thay defines which servers are going to be rebooted/shutdown when and why, and in case of unexpected shutdowns they log a more elaborate post mortem anyway.
I think I only ever found it useful when working late on RDP and accidentally hitting Shut Down instead of Log Off, an error that is easy to make in Windows 2003.
But I'm just wondering, is there any real-world use to it that is not already tracked through the usual IT monitoring/planning procedures?
I have a small AD Domain running on Win2008 R2. I have several e-Mail accounts with a Provider.
What I would like is to have a Mail Server in my Domain that picks up the mail from my Provider (POP3), stores them locally and makes them accessible to a domain user through IMAP (so that I can access it on multiple machines). Sending mail should go from my Client to my Server and them to the providers SMTP.
I'd like to integrate with my exising Active Directory users, so that my IMAP Usernames/Password are the same always as the AD User. Also, it should behave "friendly" towards the Windows Backup, so no "can't backup as files are in use"
Can Exchange 2010 do that? Or is there another Mail Server that does that? I don't need fancy stuff like public folders and the like.
I want to setup a little fileserver/domain controller/sharepoint server.
SharePoint shouldn't run on the DC directly, so I want to use HyperV. But I never used it before, so I wonder: Should I install the Domain Controller and HyperV Role and run 1 VM for SharePoint? Or should I run HyperV server and then 2 servers, one for SharePoint and 1 for DC?
Usage is minimal with only 1 user. Hardware will be an Athlon II X3 with 3x2.9 GHz and 4 GB RAM.
Operating System will be Server 2008 R2 Standard in all cases.
Now that Core 2008 R2 added .net support, I wonder if it's possible to run SharePoint 2010 Web Frontends on it?
Found some articles saying you can't run it on 2008 Core (no ASP.net support), but haven't found anything about R2 Core.
Is there some (free) tool that reads Performance Counters (Windows 2008 Server, but 2003 support is a bonus) and adds them to a MS SQL Server 2008 database?
Doesn't need to be too fancy as in the worst case I can add "log rotation" through triggers.
Edit: To clarify, I want to read any Performance Counter (CPU Load, Disk Queue, ASP.net stuff) and merely use SQL Server as a datastore. Kinda like how the built-in CSV Logging works.
I'm trying to uniquely identify objects in an Active Directory domain. The sAMAccountName or mail address can sadly change, and so can the objectSid. But I saw that there is an objectGUID as well.
I just wonder: Can this change for any reason, or can I assume this will never change?
The reason that I'm asking is that I'm referencing some AD objects from an application and need to come back weeks or months later and still get the object, but the application is unable to have any way to get notified of changes. So I need a value that never changes.
If I have an infrastructure with some Web Servers (Windows 2003 and IIS) and a Database (SQL Server 2005) and ASP.net, I wonder if there is a catch-all tool that simply allows me to say "Ok, I now open this page and you tell me exactly what happens on ASP.net, IIS and SQL, CPU, RAM and Hard Disk".
Of couse I can add tracing to my ASP.net and then to my SQL Server and then I have to see how to deal with IIS (as images for example do not go through ASP.net), but I wonder if anyone has a way to get an overview of pretty much everything in a simple way? Preferably free, but as long as it's good it can also cost money.
With Windows XP, it was not possible to install it to a USB Hard drive (without diving deep into unsupported terrain). With Windows 7, it looks like VHD Support could solve that.
But is there a supported way to install either Windows Vista or Windows 2008 Server on a USB Hard drive?
I use LogParser on my IIS Log to get a graph of accesses per hour:

The problem: If there is no access to SomePage.aspx during an hour, that row is simply missing from the output. I just wonder, can I tell LogParser to insert a row for each hour, even if COUNT(*) is 0?
Basically I wound need something that tells logparser to use MIN(date) and MAX(date) as "boundaries" and "expect" one line per hour. The display is currently just into a text file and then into Excel to create a graph (hits per hour on SomePage.aspx) so to get a proper linear graph, I need an entry for each hour, even it it's 0, and if I can get it directly from LogParser that would be great.
I wonder what the common guidelines for large-scale Sharepoint 2007 Architecture is? Mostly, I'd like to plan how many Site Collections are needed, and why I should split my Intranet into multiple Site Collections instead of just having one to rule them all?
The question that derives from that is what the disadvantages of different Site collections are. From what I see, they can not talk to each other (i.e. the CQWP can not read data from another Site Collection) and I have to deploy my features on every Site Collection.
Are there any good resources and white papers on larger-scale Sharepoint Architecture? I found some stuff which tells me how many servers, but I'm looking for something one level higher, talking about Application Pools, Content Databases and Site Collections.
