I'm trying to get stats on global CPU usage of a server on a per-user basis so I installed GNU Accounting (acct) (on Ubuntu server 16.04).

When asking for stats with sa -m, it takes data from the current /var/log/account/pacct, which is rotated by the acct service. I understood that I can give the archived rotated files as input to it, if I want to get statistics on older entries.

The problem is that sa gives no dates on the statistics that are displayed, and I couldn't find a way to have dates on it? This would allow me get statistics on a day or week manner.

I want to define a simple service to be started at boot, being on Ubuntu server 16.10. So I have created a /etc/init.d/mydaemon

I somehow messed up between upstart and systemd: at first I thought I had to setup an upstart service. So after converting my file to an upstart syntax, I ran update-rc.d mydaemon defaults.

I figured out my error and ran update-rc.d mydaemon remove, converted to systemd syntax, and ran systemctl enable mydaemon, but get the error:

mydaemon.service is not a native service, redirecting to systemd-sysv-install.
Executing: /lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install enable mydaemon
update-rc.d: error: mydaemonDefault-Start contains no runlevels, aborting.

I have a DNS server (pfSense) for my LAN, working perfectly, but some timeouts occur that I can't explain. Especially the "host" command gives the correct answer immediately, but then tries 2 times more with timeouts:

The timeouts happens during last 4 lines of the output. This happens on the two different machines I have (Mac and Linux).

How can I know why are there two trials while answer has already been given?

I have a server running OSX (Mountain Lion), accessed by a Windows 7 box. Investigating a permissions problem from the Win client, I open the permissions dialog on a network share's directory and see this:

Authentication on workstations are local, and authentication on server is made by Open Directory. How do I tell who is who?

My company is moving to a new place, and the only thing I know about the cabling is that there are cables and a patch panel. I have no idea about the cable speed, quality, and I'm a software guy with little IT knowledge.

What should I do to audit the installation, and check that it is sane? Should I buy a device such as Pinger+ or can I do it with software tools?

I'm evaluating Parallels Server on Mac OS X  Lion Server, and during installation it sets up a "Management Node" VM for managing the other VMs. The problem is that my DHCP server is filtering MAC addresses, so for now the installation fails since connection can't be established.

How can I know its MAC address so that I can authorize it?

Active Directory, OpenLDAP or Apple's Open Directory have different schemas for holding user info and group membership. Having a Open Directory here I can say for example that user's Distinguished Name is attribute dn, while it seems to be distinguishedName for AD.

Is there a site that references how the main DS hold the info, and if not why not start to list them here? I searched for it but couldn't find it.

  • username (aka login)
  • real name (aka full name)
• Group
  • member list

We have a NAS here, in a small company, that I sysadmin (not my full-time job) and my boss want to have control on directory access. It's a QNAP so it's Linux-powered.

The NAS doesn't provide an easy way to do it (can't change owner), and changing it in Windows interface is a real pain (need dozens of clicks). He doesn't know CLI so I don't want to tell him how to do it with SSH, too dangerous

So I'm looking for a simple (and open source) web app that we can use to easily administrate this. Do you know any?

I'm moving a site from a Synology server to another, and want automatic redirect. I have virtual host on the syno, the site is in domain sub.domain.com. The new site is in newdom.com/sub. This is the httpd-vhost.conf-user file:
