I'm looking to add a bit of memory to MySQL on a Linode VPS server on which I've got a small facebook (canvas app) PHP app using MySQL running. I'm not super familiar with MySQL optimization so I'm hoping to find a simple answer. I think I want to increase the key_buffer size (the default is 16M) to something like 32M to start, but I'm not sure if I need to tweak anything else as well. All I've done so far is increase the query_cache_size to 32M from 16M.

There's also key_buffer under [mysqld] and key_buffer under [isamchk]. What are the difference between those two?

If I have Linode 2048MB (http://www.linode.com) VPS, what would recommend I set the buffers to? I don't expect this site to have tons of visitors, but I'd like it to be as optimized as possible. Definitely way more heavy on the database access than PHP and very few HTTP requests.

I'm attempting to configure apache to use a bit less memory. I'm wondering what you would consider to be either "heavy memory users" or just totally unnecessary when it comes to the loaded modules. I don't want to do anything yet, but so far I've commented out:

mod_status
mod_info
mod_userdir
mod_cern_meta
mod_asis

I'd love to get apache to run even lighter. Any recommendations? Sample conf files? Thanks!

We're on the mid-tier DV Rage server on media temple using Zend Framework, and we've been getting QoS warnings in Virtuzzo pretty consistantly. We've spent the last week installing APC (tweaking that to death), mysql and apache tweaks (many recommended by Media Temple), front end gzip, Zend_View caching, and every optimization technique recommended in the Zend manual. At this point, I think we've gotten over our kmemsize issues mostly, but we are still getting tcpsndbuf warnings and I honestly don't know what to do with those. Our traffic is around 1000 uniques a day and I'm having a hard time believing that we can't support that. MT seems to be kind of "stingy" with the memory and after all this work optimizing, the answer seems to be "add more memory/upgrade"

  1. Should we just stop "playing server" and start recommending actual dedicated servers for our clients?
  2. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how much memory we need to be running a Zend Framework-based site...assuming our current of "1GB of dedicated RAM" (what it says in the marketing)?

I know this is a lot to ask, but we're at our wits end and we're more "code" than "server" people (so apologies in advance if any of this sounded stupid). :)

Edit. Ok, so of our 512MBs, (mt) has allocated 13MB to kmemsize. Is this ridiculously low? I feel like it is.
