I have a domain with a wildcard subdomain entry pointed at IP-A:
domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
*.domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Can I create another CNAME pointing a spcified subdomain at a different IP. Or, rather, if I create such an entry, will it resolve to the 2nd IP?:
domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
*.domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
thing.domain-a.com -> yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
Will that work? Does it even make sense?
I've got a domain (example.com) registered with godaddy and pointed to nameservers hosted by linode. I've got a multisite WordPress install on linode (blogs.com) and I want to point the domain to a subdomain of the wordpress install (example.com -> example.blogs.com).
The subdomain of the wordpress install works fine - DNS can find it and I can browse to it. in the linode's DNS manager I've set up a CNAME to make the pointer I referenced above.
Whois shows that the linode nameservers are set for the domain, but DNS can't find any nameserver for example.com.
Am I missing a step, or do I have something misconfigured?

This is a fairly recent change - a few hours ago, so maybe I'm just being impatient? The nameserver changes made at the same time came through pretty quickly. I figured that the CNAME entry would be simultaneous with that; am I wrong in that expectation?
I'm testing a moderately high volume (eventually possibly up to 100,000 or so) of emails in a script I'm writing. I'm generating a list of emails that will end up in one of my accounts and having the script process them, and it's working pretty well, but for right now I just want to make sure sendmail is receiving the right number of requests without actually sending any mail.
I've got sendmail turned off and when I run the script I get the expected number of requests in the deferred queue (when I run mailq I get the right number of requests marked "(Deferred: Connection refused by [127.0.0.1])").
I know if I had sendmail running and wanted to delete the messages that were actually queued I could delete the contents of /var/spool/mqueue (I'm on an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS machine). However with sendmail turned off there's nothing in mqueue, and when I turn sendmail on it starts to send all of those emails, I can't delete them from mqueue as fast as sendmail processes them.
Is there any way for me to delete them from the backlog with sendmail turned off so I don't accidentally send some? Right now if they get sent it's no big deal (again they all end up in my mailbox), but I would like to test it with an actual set of test data, and it's important that those emails not get inadvertently spammed.
I've got an Ubuntu (9.04/Jaunty) server VPS that's not properly rotating syslogs.
Here's what I've checked so far:

I was thinking that perhaps the fact that sysklogd seems to be running it's process as syslog (the owner of the syslogd per ps -C syslogd -o user= | head -n 1) means that there's some sort of permissions issue, and that seems to be supported by the results of running sudo -u syslog run-parts --verbose /etc/cron.daily which ends up with a bunch of permissions erros, but I'm not sure what the best way to resolve that would be.
Contents of my sysklogd file follow, in case that's of assistance. The touch /etc/crontouchtest bit is something I inserted to verify when the file is run successfully. It updates the last used time (ls -lut /etc/crontouchtest) when I execute the run-parts as root, but not when the cron.daily runs.

I'm trying to build a bash one-liner to loop over the directories within the current directory and tar the content into unique tars, using the directory name as the tar file name. I've got the basics working (finding the directory names, and tarring them up with those names) but my loop tosses some error messages and I can't understand where it's getting the commands its trying to run.
Here's the mostly-working one-liner:

The "strange" output is:

What portion of the command that I'm running do I not understand and that's generating that output?
We have a few databases that are stuck in legacy mode at SQL Server 2000. I commonly use SQL Server Management Studio from SQL Server 2005 to query the data in these dbs from my desktop, but have been logging in to the server to use the SQL Server 2000 tools installed there to manage permissions and perform other admin tasks.
Would it be a problem to use SQL Server 2005 from my client machine for this purpose?
