By doing an echo when I am logged in as root I can see I have a lot of junk in my PATH (probably from running tests and then forgetting all about it).
What's the best way to clean it up? I am not looking for anything fancy -- is there a .profile file I can edit? If so, which one (there's too many and I am a newbie!).
Any help appreciated!
I am Linux newbie, I managed (it was a bit of an ordeal) to get a VNC server (TightVNC) running on a SLES 11 SP1 EC2 instance. Monitor manager on the VNC xstartup file is gnome (it took me a while to figure that out).
Now I can connect to the machine via VNC client (on a mac connect to server vnc:address:port) and it seems to work fine.
I meant to install all the software I needed on the machine through Yast -- problem is when I click on computer --> Yast nothing at all comes up (not even the loading clock).
Also when I click on the Computer --> Applications --> Datetime utility the loading clock comes up but the utility doesn't open, same thing with the utility to manage users/groups, the clock comes up but then it goes away and nothing opens.
I know this is pretty vague -- but I am just looking for advice in terms of to troubleshoot this.
Is this likely to be related to gnome and I could be fine just by switching to a different monitor manager or is there something terribly wrong here?
I didn't really mess up with it too much, just installed TightVNC, edited the xstartup file and installed gnome (all via zypper install commands).
OK - I am linux newbie - I am trying to edit a file from bash via edit <filename> command in whatever the default mode is (I am assuming 'vi'?).
Problem is for the hell of me I cannot how to save and out of edit mode - this cheatsheet seems to suggest ESC should do the trick but it doesn't seem to work.
I am connecting via ssh from a mac to a linux suse enterprise 11 box.

Assuming I can ssh to my Linux instance (SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1) as root and that I can transfer files into it - how do I install a VNC server (let's say RealVNC free version) on the machine so that I can remote desktop from my mac (I am planning to use ChickenOfTheVNC as client)?
In other words: Where do I copy the files to and how do I install the server?
P.S. there are other questions about this but they start in the middle of things - so I am not able to follow with my limited knowledge of Linux.

I created a Linux SUSE instance etc. now I am trying to remote into it from my mac using a VNC client (Chicken of the VNC client): I have the public dns of the instance but I obviously need a password to do so.
I understand I can generate it somehow from my key pair - HOW?
Can anyone provide a brief explanation in layman's terms (as in "management friendly") of just what vSphere is, what can be done with it and why it's better than the alternatives?
Also, examples of possible real-world applications appreciated.

I've never used Amazon EC2 - I am thinking to test a few instances for running intensive computation processes I have a requirement for rather than buying real hardware.
I am given to understand the thing is quite easy to setup - but I have no clue of how it actually works, in terms of transferring data to my ec2 instances.
So the question is how can I upload stuff to my instance?

Never seen this before - My vista cmd shell started displaying everything in yellow and outputs the following as soon as I start it:

Any clue of why this could be happening and how do I go back to normal?
I thought might've run a bat file that might've wiped my classpath ... but I checked my classpath and it seems to be fine - also I suspect the problem might be totally unrelated.
I am having problems with Google webmaster tools and sitemaps with my domain.
When setting the sitemap all I get from webmaster tool still is -->Sitemap is HTML ... and I think I found out the reason:
I registered on google webmaster tools my site as http://mydomain.com but the app is hosted on appspot at http://myapp.appspot.com which is mapped to mydomain.com.
If I register http://myapp.appspot.com everything works fine (sitemap validated) - so it looks the problem is somehow related to the fact that http://myapp.appspot.com is mapped to http://mydomain.com.
This it's not ideal because I need a sitemap for mydomain.com ... any idea about how to overcome?
