I am trying to setup squid3 as an HTTPS proxy using the tutorial given here. I have properly setup the proxy settings in my browser and when I try to hit HTTP web sites, I am able to connect successfully. However, I keep getting a "Connection timed out error" whenever I hit an HTTPS protocol web site and the following error in my /var/log/squid3/cache.log:

2016/06/20 19:12:47|  NF getsockopt(SO_ORIGINAL_DST) failed on local=<local_ip_address>:3129 remote=<remote_ip_address>:55209 FD 8 flags=33: (92) Protocol not available

I have spent a lot of time googling this error but could not arrive at a solution which would configure squid as an HTTP proxy. How do I get this working?

I am trying to reset the root password for my CoreOS machine for which I need access to the machine's grub. However, I don't see the grub at all and the machine boots up. I am on CoreOS stable (1010.5.0) and have added set timeout=15 to /usr/share/oem/grub.cfg and rebooted my machine but I still don't see my grub.

I came to know about this option from here: https://github.com/coreos/bugs/issues/302 but I see that this option was not meant to be permanent. If this has been removed, is there another way I can configure it?

PS: I am running the CoreOS machine as a VM on VMware ESXi, if that matters and whenever I reboot the machine and press any key I see the following console:

I am trying to establish a communication channel between the host and one of its guest virtual machine using kvm as a hypervisor. For this, I am using virtio-serial.

To create the virtual machine, I issued the following command:

qemu-system-x86_64 \

-chardev socket,path=/tmp/foo,server,nowait,id=foo \
-device virtconsole,name=jobsfoo,chardev=foo,name=org.ubuntu.foo \

And then for communicating, on the guest, I use:

socat /dev/hvc0 -

And on the host:

socat /tmp/foo -

I come to understand that /tmp/foo is a socket and /dev/hvc0 a character device.

Why is there an symmetric interface for communication: a socket on the host and a character device on the guest?
