How do I make it so that whenever the file blah.pdf on computer A is changed, its copy at computer B is updated? I believe I must setup some daemons on A and B.
A is a Linux system and B is a Windows system.
Motivation: I'm editing and compiling TeX documents on A and it'd be good if I can see the output on B's monitor. Alt-tabbing is kind of pain. Maybe I should really just buy a second monitor or a bigger one.
It is said in NoMachine NX setup and FreeNX ubuntu setup article that using the default SSH key for NX server is bad for security. How much is it bad?
Is it the case that the default SSH key is the same for every NX user in the world and everybody can login to an NX server which uses the default key?
Remote Firefox over SSH is pretty usable until you try a right click to make context menu show up. It takes about 5 seconds for the context menu to appear. It seems it takes many round trips.
ssh -c blowfish-cbc -C -Y host
I believe with the above command, it's more faster. I heard blowfish-cbc cipher is pretty fast while being secure. Is there anything else I should look?
But then maybe that is just placebo effect. I don't know how to time this 5 seconds event exactly.
How can I make my VNC server on a Linux machine fast as possible (without trading off security) (and connecting to an already running X session)?
I'm running a VNC server (x11vnc) on my Ubuntu and I occasionally connect to it from another Ubuntu machine over LAN.
x11vnc -localhost -usepw -ncache 10 -forever -display :0
I use above command and SSH port forwarding. I connect with this (xtightvncviewer):
vncviewer -encodings 'copyrect tight hextile' localhost:0
Connecting to an already running X session is important. If that were not case, I'd use NX or SSH X11 forwarding.
SSH key fingerprint is shown by running this command:
ssh-keygen -lf /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub
and the fingerprint is some strange code. Is there a way to turn this code into an image hash or something like Gravatar?
How can I configure VNC server so that it can be accessed only via SSH tunnel?
With the default VNC server setting, there are at least two ways for someone else to login to my computer: by directly logging into my VNC server and my SSH server. Two doors to worry about.
I'm running a personal ssh server on a nonstandard port. If someone tries to log into my ssh server thru the standard port 22, it seems that the server sends "Connection refused" message.
$ ssh localhost
ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused
How can I make it so that it doesn't send such message and it behaves like it's not running?
How can I find out the list of all services running on my computer that might give access to hackers to log in to my computer?
One day I looked at my /var/log/auth.log from my computer and I discovered there had been several ssh login attempts and that ssh server was installed in my computer. But I couldn't remember me installing ssh server on this computer. I must have installed some package that depends on ssh package. Made me wonder what other services is running in this computer that I don't know of.
