We work extensively via VPN. Everybody needs to connect on their own, which is very tedious.
I am thinking that there needs to be a router (box or linux) that I can connect to VPN from, and then everybody joins its wi-fi, is able to connect to our servers made available by VPN.
Have you done this before ?
so we are stuck with this closed source system that keeps on adding folders to one directory, and it's going to hit the 32k limit soon because it's ext3. and that folder is expected to have +100k folders very soon too.

When I run

It successfully mounts but it runs on foreground.
When I run without 'debug' parameter, it doesn't mount at all.
Server is ubuntu 8.04
Any ideas why?
UPDATE: When I run the command as ROOT it does mount. It doesn't work with other users.

our apache runs as www-data:psacln
if this line is run;

How can I set our ubuntu/apache so that it gives the group write permission by default upon creating files/folders within web sites?
We have a shared hosting platform. Our users need to connect to their FTP accounts on the main machine. Main machine is a gigantic computer with infinite CPU and RAM
What would be the best design to allow FTP Connections on there ?
This is kind of only thing I can think of, do you have a more practical solution where i can just get this done on the main server ?
I have thousands of directories, all of them has this format;
/var/www/vhosts/[USERNAME].company.com/conf/
and i have a file called x.txt, it's content should have
[USERNAME] and some static text...
so when i do dir /var/www/vhosts/*/conf/ , I am getting all the directories that I need to copy the file under, however, I don't know how to grab that [USERNAME] and put it in that file that i need to copy.
All suggestions welcome. I can only use shell scripting on this environment.

I need to get the folder contents in one command line, right now if I do stat or ls, it tells me file type is Symbolic Link but it doesn't tell me if it's a file or a folder.
I'm using this;
stat -c '{"name": "%n", "size": "%s", "perms":"%a","type":"%F","user":"%U", "dereference","%N"}' /*;
Important point is, i need a one liner and very speedy output. I couldn't get around this doing ls, maybe there is a solution using find, locate etc. Or if u know how to read from mlocatedb ?

i need to store directory information in a way that i can parse as json.
when i do ls -m it gives me comma separated values but no user/group/size info.

I have recently learnt that to be able to increase the amount of virtualhosts that we can serve via Apache depends on file-descriptors.
they say the value should be added to /etc/sysctl.conf as
fs.file-max = 65536
What is the correlation between amount of RAM I have with the number above ?
Could you tell me like;
"You should have X GB RAM and Y GHz CPU to be able to set fs.file-max to Z"
I basically want to know X - Y - Z relationship to be able to make the setting.
Server is an Ubuntu 8.04 and I can increase the RAM or CPU to virtually any number through my cloud server provider.
ps: or why should I care about this? Is there a way that I can set up my system that it will serve as my memory permits it to serve ?

Our domain.com/app/index.php is loading domain.com/blog in an iframe.
So my redirect rules should be like;
- domain.com/ => /app/index.php
- domain.com/blog(.*) => /app/index.php?(.*)
Second rule is there because if someone wants to go to blog directly, we run our app first and put the blog in iframe, and append incoming querystring to iframe src tag so that it opens not on it's homepage but on requested URL.
Problem is, since I am redirecting everything on my first rule, iframe ends up in infinite loop. It tries to putself inside another iframe within it's own iframe endlessly.
Is there a way to assign an Env var so that if redirection is made, it's not repeated ?
Or to clearly address the problem, I never want blog to open without the app. How should my htaccess be ?

ps: serverX is Plesk. NIS,LDAP requires Plesk to change how it operates, so it's not very handy. I don't know if it's ok to mention here but I'd be happy to turn this into a professional assignment if anyone can take this pain away from me.
Can I create another server that uses master server's /etc/passwd to authenticate it's users, and if I share users' homes then they can do everything they want within their home directories without consuming master server's cpu/ram.
I'm trying to build a scalable application without suffocating my main server with millions of file requests, so my aim is to build processing servers around a master server.

So requests are routed based on proximity/where they come from.
You can do that as many times as you like, which is a great service for our distributed application needs.
However, we want to manage this on our own servers. Do you know any linux package that does this ?
Can I run chmod o=- -R / ?
I don't want a newly created user to be able to cat /etc/passwd, just because of its default permissions. And I want to understand why these defaults were chosen for permissions on all (well most) system files as well as for other files.
I have three users:
There are two directories,
I want my user_super to be able to modify these files and be able to chown it back to original.
user_1 and user_2 cannot read/change each others files and are jailed to their root folders.
How do I go about that?
PS: user_super should have no root permissions, user_super will run apache on the server so, it should be as close as possible to www-data (Apache) user.
We are setting up iptables for each server we run, is there a nagios kind of tool that will allow us to see and manage from a central console without requiring us to get in each server and setup each and every iptables ?
If there is an open source firewall that does this I'd be glad to know. (we don't want to use webmin)
