I am familiar with Debian based distros and now I have to administer CentOS machines. I have two CentOS 4.4 machine and I both applied 

yum upgrade

on them and they are both (lsb_release -a) 4.9 final now.

However when I looked the kernel version

uname -ar

One of them 

 Machine A: 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp
 Machine B: 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp

Then I copied Machine B's CentOS-Base.repo file to Machine A then copied B's yum.conf to A and I retried but yum upgrade but A's kernel version is still same. What can I do? What do I miss? Thanks

I want to run nginx on my Ubuntu 10.04 32bit Linode VPS. 

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www
sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nginx/development
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nginx

To make a nginx virtualhost:

mkdir -p /var/www/example.com/{public,logs}
sudo nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/example.com

and wrote following

server {
     listen   80;
     server_name  www.example.com;
     rewrite ^/(.*) http://example.com/$1 permanent;
     }

server {
     listen   80;
     server_name example.com;

     access_log /var/www/example.com/logs/access.log;
     error_log /var/www/example.com/logs/error.log;

     location / {
          root   /var/www/example.com/public/;
          index  index.html;
          }
}

Then I enabled the virtualhost example.com

sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/example.com /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/example.com
sudo /etc/init.d/nginx restart

I put a index.html to /var/www/example.com/public and enter example.com URL from my browser. Then I got following

403 Forbidden
nginx/0.8.53

tail /var/log/nginx/error.log gives following error

*38 directory index of "/var/www/" is forbidden, client: 88.224.1.128, server: localhost, request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", host: www.example.com

I redo 

sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www
sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www

but it gives same error.

and cat /etc/nginx/nginx.cnf

user www-data;

pid        /var/run/nginx.pid;

events {

If I put the index.html to /var/www/ then I can see html file but any attempt to put it under /var/www/example.com/public fails. I looked at file and folder permissions they are ok all belongs to www-data and readable (775)

What can I do to make nginx work? Thanks

One of my client has a .de domain. I have VPS from Linode and I am pretty happy with them. Domain is registered with godaddy. DE domains Name servers have some restrictions. I first try to move name server to Linode. I set TTL values accordingly but couldn't succeed with Linode. Then try to configure name server of godaddy with adding A and CNAME record to point my Linode VPS with no success. Now I have one option I look forward good VPS or shared hosting that have a name server works with de domains. I found a shared hosting but they dont have php-curl installed. If you ever hosted a de domain please share your experience.

I have a VPS from Linode. I deployed Ubuntu 10.04 server. I added a user and put it sudoers file. when I write as a user

apti <TAB>

it comletes with tab to

aptitude <TAB>

but when I continue to

aptitude upd <TAB>

it didnt complete but on my desktop it works great. Even worse if I try same command with sudo

sudo apti <TAB>

does not work I checked .basrc, .profile/.bashrc and /etc/bash.basrc files and none of them were commented out so what is wrong. By the way when I root it works

mine ~/bashrc

    . /etc/bash_completion

bash sudo vps

I have a few folders named folder1 folder2 etc.. under a root folder. In each folder there are many xml files. In each xml file there are number of occurence of text patern (in case of under folder1) folder1.xxx folder1.yyy . I want to replace all the folder1.xxx with just xxx and folder2.yyy with yyy etc. I know first I need to get all the folder list and process each files under each folder and replace the texts accordingly. I using Ubuntu linux distro I tried sed but didnt succeed. Could you show me a qucik way to do this no matter whether it perl or bash or any other script. Thanks
