I'd like to know if the following is easy/possible/recommended.

The version of Ubuntu I'm using (jaunty) has an out of date package that I need to upgrade: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libapache2-mod-wsgi (it's at version 2.3).

A future version (karmic) has the new version: http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/libapache2-mod-wsgi (version 2.5)

Is it possible to use apt-get to install the new version in a way that will work? Or is it simpler to just install from source?

As I understand it, if I install from source, then I'll be responsible for keeping it up to date, and apt-get update/upgrade won't do anything.

If I add the karmic universe repository to my package sources, what will happen? Will it affect any other installed packages or just the one I add? Will apt-get install libapache2-mod-wsgi get the right version? What happens if/when ubuntu update the jaunty package?

I've got a Django app running under Apache2 (linux) using mod_wsgi and file uploads fail when running in daemon mode but works when the python interpreter is embedded. Any idea what could be causing this and how I fix it?

The following Apache configuration is working:

But when I add the following directives to daemonize the wsgi process, the file upload instantly fails.

WSGIDaemonProcess mygroup display-name=%{GROUP} inactivity-timeout=600
WSGIProcessGroup mygroup

There doesn't appear to be anything in the Apache error log.

The Django form is using a FileField and just gives a "this field is required" error when doing the form.is_valid(). The view has a @login_required decorator. All of this is working fine when running in embedded mode.

Running as a daemon allows updating the code much more gracefully (by just touching the wsgi file) than when embedded which requires an Apache reload, so I'd much prefer that if it's possible.

Update: This occurs with Opera, not with FireFox.

I currently have a domain name registered for a Linux/Apache server that I am going to replace with another on a new IP address.

Migrating the data will be relatively quick and a 5 minute disruption during that process is acceptable.

The DNS record has a TTL from 6-12 hours apparently, which I can't speed up.

What are the likely consequences of this change? Presumably users who are still looking at the old address will continue to hit the old server, while users who's dns cache has expired or is empty will see the new domain.

Is it possible to do some kind of redirect from the old server (with Apache or iptables) to the new IP? The old server can continue to run as long as necessary.

I'm having a problem with the clock running fast in Ubuntu 8.04 server (2.6.24-24-generic kernel) running in VirtualBox 3.04.

It's drifting quickly, something like 5 minutes per hour.

I think it was working fine until I upgraded to VirtualBox 3.04 (from 2.something). I had ntpd running and the only thing I had to do was /etc/init.d/ntp stop, ntpdate ..., /etc/init.d/ntp start when the virtual machine was suspended/resumed.

Today, I've tried installing the VirtualBox Guest Additions, and they're running (according to /etc/init.d/vboxadd status.)

Running vboxadd-service --foreground --verbose Results in:

vboxadd-service: Starting 'timesync' in the main thread
vboxadd-service: adjtime by -380331911000 ns
vboxadd-service: adjtime by -381107064000 ns
vboxadd-service: adjtime by -381883899000 ns

Which looks like it's trying, but failing, to update the time.

So, I'm not sure what to do, I can't find any consensus on whether ntpd should be running or not? And if not, how do I stop it from starting up again on reboot?
