Up until a few days ago, I had a particular setup that was as follows. Using SVN, all of the websites that I developed were committed to a source control drop box on a local testing server. Then using IIS, a new website was set up to point at the last revision of each particular website I developed and display it to the outside world using a specific URL.

I have just moved over to using git and github, meaning all of my source controlled code is now no longer stored on a local testing server. As a result of this, I am not sure how I can go about doing a similar thing to what I did with the SVN setup, however I need to be able to essentially have that same setup again, just using Git.

So basically, how can I go about getting my local testing server to point at the GitHub repository for that site?

I have a small team of developers and we have purchased a small private repository account. Essentially all we want to do is have this central repository store all of our source code and for each individual developer be able to push and pull to and from that repository as necessary. My understanding of how this works is that each each developer push and pulls to the CLONE URL of the repository (for example: [email protected]:SmallDevTeam/SourceCode). Along with this I am under the impression that each individual developer must have a separate GitHub account and that GitHub identifies each individual developer's commits via their SSH key. Currently, the central repository is set up but contains no SSH Keys. Two of the developers have set up their individual accounts also and have stored their SSH Keys on their accounts.

However, when each developer commits to the remote repository using TortoiseGit, there is no clear evidence of who has committed what aside from the news feed (which is useless as time passes by). I expected to have some sort of log of who the author of each commit was, however GitHub just states that the Author is the central repository (For Example: The repository is set up at [email protected]:SmallDevTeam/SourceCode, therefore the Author is stated as being [SmallDevTeam]). Am I missing something? Surely this should be the developers account name instead?

Currently I have a networked server. I want to be able to have full access to a directory on that server from any computer on the network using a URL (in order to add files to it via source control etc).

From what I have read, the directory needs to be set up on a specific port. So for example the URL for the directory would be:

MyServer:80/CodeRepository/

However I am not very versed in this sort of thing and my knowledge is purely development based. How would I go about configuring this?

My understanding of Git is the following:

1) Working tree ---> File system where you manually make changes.
2) Staging area ---> Where changes lie until they're committed.
3) Repository ---> Where committed changes go (local or remote).

Essentially what I really want to have is:

1) Working tree - local file directory on my desktop.
2) Staging area - lie on a networked server somewhere.
3) Repository - GitHub to keep track of my source code.

I'm not sure if I have confused myself doing all this reading about Git and whether or not the situation I have just described is actually feasible?

Essentially I want all the developers on my team to have a local working tree copy of the source code, then be able to stage changes to a server on our network, and then from here perform a final commit to GitHub.

Is this correct? Or does the staging area have to be on each local machine?

I am using Git as my method of managing source control. Currently I am just using Git on my local machine with a local repository. I have a networked server setup which I would like to configure a repository on. Essentially I want to be able to push to the networked server, thus cutting out the need to use GitHub.

Someone has mentioned that the use of a daemon will be needed so that i can essentially tell Git to push to a repository at an arbitrary URL, for example "MyServer:8443/GitRepository/".

Unfortunately, I am completely lost on how exactly I go about doing this and would greatly appreciate some help.

I have a windows server which I can access locally or remotely over the internet through remote desktop connection, etc.

I want to set up a git repository (something similar to "trunk" in subversion), that can contain a series of repositories for multiple projects.

Does anyone know how I go about doing this? I want to do it using a GUI if possible. I have followed this Git Bash Tutorial but it's very long winded and not exactly what I'm after.

I'm using a Git client called MSYSGIT. Using this I just want to be able to set up remote repositories and start committing source code.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
