I'm attempting to use Microsoft Message Analyzer version 1.3 to perform a live trace on an IIS 8.5 server. I'm an admin on my Windows 7 workstation and the target server.
Each remote provider I want to attach to must also be installed on my machine. Is there a way to download, or copy the Microsoft-Windows-IIS-Logging Provider to my Windows 7 workstation? I'd like to be able to do this without installing IIS on my workstation. I'd also like to avoid running Message Analyzer on a server.
Is there a way to parse .mdb files from the command line (findstr or via a WSH script) to identify database links?
I am attempting to identify all .mdb files within a large file share that link to a specific database server. I've tried manually searching a few .mdb files that link to the database server within a hex editor, but a search on the database server name doesn't return any hits.
The file server is running Windows 2003.

I found some text in my text editor (TextPad) that looks like embedded ODBC information: ..."S.E.R.V.E.R.=.m.y.s.e.r.v.e.r"... I'm not sure what encoding is being used, findstr is unable to locate this text within the file.

I recently worked on a problem caused by an application storing the wrong location of MSSQL .ldf and .mdf files. The SQL Server was 2005.
The application was looking for the files in: \server\app root\database\data and \server\app root\database\log, but the files were in \server\mssql\data and \server\mssql\logs. I moved the database files to the location where the application was expecting them, which fixed the problem.
I don't understand why an application would need to know where these files are, it should only care about an ODBC name, or OLE access (host name, credentials). Does anyone know why an application would need this information?
I am attempting to monitor changes to IIS server configuration with TripWire, and have noticed the IIS 6.0 MetaBase.xml file is frequently changed. I understand that IIS frequently backs up the MetaBase, but why would values for the various ACL and password entries change with each revision?
The values that change:
AdminACL
AnonymousUserPass
LogOdbcPassword
WAMUserPass
UNCPassword
New revisions are triggered by simply opening iis.msc, even though none of the settings are changed.
Does anyone have experience with Puppet or cfengine like setups for a Windows server environment? Is there such a thing?
I am looking to track configuration file and file security changes over a period of time. I would also like to store configuration information to rapidly deploy servers and applications in a DR situation.
Tripwire is nice, but only provides a snapshot and doesn't store changes over time, as a source-control system would.
I am looking for some advice on how to troubleshoot a failing installation without any additional tools - this means I can't use Sysinternals software. All computers are running Windows Server 2003.
Here's the situation: I am currently troubleshooting a remote installation in which a monitoring server (A) fails to remotely install a monitoring agent on the client system (B). Both A and B are members of the same domain, and A is attempting the install with a user that is a member of the admin group on B and A. The monitoring agent consists of two windows services.
I was able to get the install to work on B by running it under the local system account, which leads me to believe there is some sort of security issue. As I have several more systems for this installation, I would like to find what is failing.
I can use failure auditing on the HKLM registry hive to see if the install is failing because of some sort of registry security.
How can I see if the install fails to "grant log on as a service" and if the new service is unable to "log on as a service". I don't see any failure audits in the security log. Any other ideas would be appreciated.
