Generic Error's questions

There is a remote network which I can VPN to. On this network is a Windows Server 2008 install which I would like manage but the server's disk is full. I have tried:

• Remote Desktop - fails.
• Windows Explorer - fails.
• net use - fails with disk space error.
• Remote shutdown - fails with disk space error.

Some other things which I thought about but aren't installed are: VNC, telnet server, etc. I cannot restart the server physically.

The server is on a domain which I have administrator rights to, can I do something via Active Directory that would cause the computer to free space? Any other ideas?

I have an Exchange 2003 server that sent me an email this morning:

SMTP Server Remote Queue Length Alert

Looking in the queues using Exchange System Manager there were just over 16,000 spam emails waiting to be sent out. We send via an external filtering service which was disconnecting our server, presumably due to the level of outgoing spam.

How can I find out where this mail is coming from? Does Exchange 2003 log IP addresses etc somewhere?

I currently have the following setup:

• HP DL380 G4 Server
• 6 x 73GB, Ultra160, 10k, SCSI 80 Pin Drives
• Smart Array 6i Controller
• RAID 5

One of the drives is failing and needs to be replaced. I have on hand drives that are the same size and type, but are Ultra320, 15k instead. I have verified that these drives work in another system with the same type of drive controller.

When I plug one of these in the system simply reports the drive as being offline and has nothing further to do with it. From what I have read these drives should be compatable.

Should this work at all and if so, what might be preventing it?

I'm looking for a good explanation of the IUSR and IWAM accounts used by IIS to help me better configure our hosting environment:

• Why are they there?
• What's the difference between them?
• Do the names stand for something meaningful?
• Are there any best practice changes I should make?
• IIS also gives me options to run application pools as Network Service, Local Service or Local System. Should I?
• My web server is part of a domain, how does this change things?

It seems to be common to create your own versions of these accounts when deploying multiple sites to a server which raises some extra questions:

• When might I want to create my own IUSR and IWAM accounts?
• How should I create these additional accounts so they have the correct permissions?

I am using both IIS 6 and and IIS 7 with mostly default configurations.

I have a user with Outlook 2003 installed and an account on our internal Exchange server. I do not want this computer to download email from the server until the user manually selects Send / Receive.

• "Tools" > "Send/Receive" > "Disable Scheduled Send/Receive" is checked.
• "Schedule and automatic send/receive every X minutes" is unchecked under Send/Receive groups.

Outlook is still happily downloading new email every minute or so. Have I missed or misunderstood some of the settings?

The main file shares on our network are currently hosted by old Apple XServes. I had planned to replace some of these with Windows shares as I have better hardware available but have been told this is likely to cause issues with some of our Mac users.

What sort of issues am I likely to run into and what are the recommended ways of hosting general file storage in a mixed OS (Windows, OSX, occasionally linux) environment?
