I'm currently using DB2 9.7 but am interested in answers for other versions as well.
So I have an application that will be very dormant most of the time but will need high-bursting a few days out of the month. Since we are deploying on EC2 I would like to keep only one Cassandra server up most of the time and then on burst days I want to bring one more server up (with more RAM and CPU than the first) to help serve the load. What is the best way to do this? Should I take a different approach?
Some notes about what I plan to do:
My main question is how to get the nodes to share all the data since I want a replication factor of 2 (so both nodes have all the data) but that won't work while there is only one server. Should I bring up 2 extra servers instead of just one?
I'd like to set the default shell to zsh in Puppet. Preferably for the current user because I just run my modules as puppet apply mymodule.pp since I store my configuration that I use across multiple machines in git.
How can I set the default shell using puppet?
The passwords on one of my CentOS boxes is no longer accepted by ssh or su for the user clipuser but that same password is accepted by passwd (after su'ing from root to the user).
/var/log/secure doesn't really have anything useful, here is the relevant log entries:

I installed cassandra on a VM running Ubuntu Server 10.10.
cassandra login failure with org.apache.cassandra.auth.AllowAllAuthenticator but I always receive the following error message:
Login failure. Did you specify 'keyspace', 'username' and 'password'?
I'm running KVM on top of Ubuntu 10.10 Server
I can create VM's (Virtual Machine) and network interfaces fine but I cannot seem to add more than three network interfaces. As soon as I have a VM with four network interfaces it gets stuck on startup at the starting SeaBIOS page with this message:
Starting SeaBIOS (version pre-0.6.1-20100702_143500-palmer)
So far I've verified this with two VM's, a Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and a Vyatta router. The specific network hardware I assign to the VM's doesn't seem to matter. I'm trying to have one bridged interface and three private networks using Vyatta to route between them.
Does anyone know why I can't run a VM with more than three network interfaces?
Edit: Additionally the KVM thread responsible for the specific VM hangs using ~100% CPU (i.e. one core). Here's the command for the process that is hanging:

Edit: I've also found an error in dmesg that might be related (it also shows up when running virtd in verbose mode):

I've also tried disabling app armor but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
Is it possible to close a socket by using some sort of shell command/program? I've seen plenty of examples of manipulating sockets using C and other languages but have been unable to find a program dedicated to it.
This is mostly out of curiosity rather than any real need. Although it might be useful for stress-testing my application or closing a tcp socket that I don't want to be open.
I am mainly interested in Linux/Unix, but a way to do this on Windows would be nice also.
Is there any easier/more elegant way to assign a return value to a variable? So far I've been doing something like:
some_command_to_run
VAR_TO_SET=$?
But I would much prefer to have it all on one line and preferably without using the $? variable. Does anyone know how?
In my quest to configure my shell to work exactly how I want it with respect to the alt/meta key I am having some trouble. Recently I added "bindkey -m" to my .zshrc and now whenever I start a zsh shell (ie open a terminal window) I get this error "warning: `bindkey -m' disables multibyte support".
Now since I don't care much about multibyte support atm, is there a way I can disable just this warning? Even better would be a way to use 8th-bit meta as well as multibyte. Also note that this happens on a clean zsh install on 4.3.9 and 4.3.10
My reasoning for wanting bindkey -m
vim: alt mappings (my own personal commands/mappings) zsh: alt mappings (such as Alt-. to recall the last argument of the previous command) emacs: alt mappings (lots of built-ins) So, is there any way to disable this warning or otherwise accomplish what I'm trying to do?
