I have two different networks at home - one is my regular home network and another is a VPN hardware device tunneling to the work network. Is there a way to configure my laptop to be connected to both networks at the same time - one via wifi and another via ethernet cable? The ultimate goal is to have the laptop on the VPN connection, but also being able to access it from another computer that is on my home network.

I inherited a domain with a SQL Server where nobody knows password to it's admin login. I have full rights on the domain and that server, is there a way to get access to the SQL Server instance?
We are building a server to run our web site, where we will have following apps running 1. ASP.NET Web Application 2. ASP.NET WCF middletier 3. SQL Server 2008 4. Lucene + Solr + Tomcat 5. MongoDB 6. Memcached
Server will have 6 core intel processor, 24 Gb memory, 4x1TB 7,2k in RAID 10, 4x300GB RAID 10
We are thinking to install either ESXi or Hyper-V and run different apps in different VM's - Lucene, MongoBD and Memcached ar ebetter be run on a Linux; SQL Server is also better be run in a separate VM (IMHO).
My problem is - I know almost nothing about ESXi, so I woul dprefer Hyper-V, but is the performance difference going to be big between those?
Also, any ideas on how to better organize mentioned applications among VM's?
I will be adding a memcached server to my web app to offload lots of db requests. I'll be mostly caching different small id-name pairs (memberid-membername, blogid-blogname, etc) and expect total number of cached items to be in hundreds of millions.
Now, the server will be Windows 2008 R2 x64 with 48 Gb memory. Should I run one large instance of memcached x64 (40 GB) or 20 instances memcached x32 (2gb each)? The .net memcached client supports either configuration, so my question sis about memcached performance only - I'm concerned that with a billion items in one instance it will start taking considerable amount of time for cache server to lookup an item vs locating one of smaller instances and looking up only among 50 million items.
I couldn't find any statistics on the web; any ideas are highly appreciated!
I am considering whether we should get one big (48 Gb RAM) server or buy 4 smaller (12Gb RAM) servers for running memcached service. In either case I would also have stand-by spares for redundancy, and I will be able to add more servers if needed later, so this question is purely about performance, not fault tolerance or scalability.
I am leaning towards having one big server just because its easier to manage, "greener" and takes less space, but I don't know if it can perform on par with a set of smaller servers.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I'm exploring different ways of storing user-uploaded files (all are MS Office documents or alikes) on our high load web site. It's currently designed to store documents as files and have a SQL database store all metadata for those files. I'm concerned about growing out of the storage server and SQL server performance when number of documents reaches hundreds of millions. I was reading a lot of good information about CouchDB including its built-in scalability and performance, but I'm not sure how storing files as attachments in CouchDB would compare to storing files on a file system in terms of performance.
Anybody used CouchDB clusters for storing LARGE amounts of documents and in high load environment?
The web application I'm working on, will be used to upload/download large number/amounts of smaller size files - I'm looking at close to 1B files with total size of > 10Pb. I'm currently struggling with deciding the scalable architecture that would support such amounts. And here's my question - is there a way of building some sort of storage that would be seen by a windows server as one huge (10Pb and up) network storage drive, so I can write all the files to subfolders of that virtual drive? And how would it perform?
Right now I'm trying to understand if that's even possible, or if I have to implement software level sharding - writing files to different drives based on some key.
I'm a developer, not a sys admin, so I apologize if it's a naive question, and thanks in advance for patience in explaining me possibly trivial things.

Our company just changed proxy settings from using one proxy server to a bunch and inserted pac files to IE settings. The problem is, any software that doesn't allow setting proxy script (pac file) explicitly, can't get online any more. I wanted to set proxy settings globally in my system and found that proxycfg is used for that, but it doesn't seem to accept pac files.
Any ideas?

I'm currently in an early design stage for a large scale web application which will definitely be hosted on a large farm of web servers. Now, I'm trying to decide whether I want the whole site to be a www.site.com and place sub-apps in folders, like www.site.com/blogs, www.site.com/messages, etc. or whether I want to have them as subdomains, e.g. blogs.site.com, messages.site.com etc. The biggest con against subdomains is that I'll be heavily using ajax and it does't like cross-domain calls, e.g. I won't be able to call a web service hosted on www.site.com from a page hosted on blogs.site.com - browser will throw a permissions exception. The biggest con against having everything under www.site.com is that I don't see a way to dedicate web farms to specific sub-apps then. Like if I want a farm to be dedicated to blogs app, then it's easy in case of using subdomains, but how do I do that if everything is under www?
I am probably lacking some knowledge on the networking part of web farm setup so any comments/ideas would be welcomed and highly appreciated!

My host machine lost power and after reboot the Windows 2008 virtual machine hosted in it, dumps a blue screen on boot. If I try SafeMode, it gets stuck on loading \Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys - it waits for a few minutes and then bluescreens.
It's a pretty important dev machine and I would love to somehow recover it without wiping it off and reinstalling - there is a bunch of software and will take me a day or more to reinstall everything. Is there a way just to repair corrupted files? I tried install disk and chose "Repair computer" but it only offers to restore from backup, which I don't have :(
Any ideas would be highly appreciated!
I just installed Linux Ubuntu on a virtual machine and need to install memcached on it. I tried
apt-get install memcached
but it installs version 1.2.2 (from local repository), which is old. I need to install v 1.4.1 but how do I download it to the Linux box from a command line? I know there should be a way but I am not too good with linux...
Any help would be much appreciated!
