I'm looking to find a VPS service, providing me with a low cost, hosted, Debian package.

I'm unfamiliar with the OS, and, after looking at several offerings, I'm not entirely sure how I can best compare them.

What kinds of questions should I ask from a hosting provider, in order to know which one is providing me the most bang for my buck?

(I'm looking at providers which allow root access/complete control over the hosted image)

I'm trying to locate all the files on my server which use a # as part of their name, and can't seem to get the servers' file search feature to restrict its result to only # files.

How do I go about doing this?

I've set up a Visual Studio publish button for my application, including the "remove all files before publishing" setting. It looks like it's not succeeding in removing the files, though (possibly they're still locked, maybe IIS is still serving them?). Sometimes I discover left over, older, files in my testing, and have to remove the by hand.

My current workaround is to delete the site manually, and then do a publish. That kind of sucks, though. I'd like to be able to do a publish in a single click.

Is there a way to set this up? To make sure that all of the files in the directory are removed before publishing a new version of the application?

I'm looking to serve a "Work in progress" page to most of the internet, while allowing access to the site itself from a few specific, test, ip addresses.

Is this doable with IIS 7? How would you go about doing it?

I'm trying to configure the ARR, but can't seem to find it anywhere in the IIS management tool.

I've checked for permission issues (both during the install and when starting the IIS Manager). ARR shows up as an installed program, and I've tried install/uninstalling it.

What could be the problem?

I'm looking to set up a recurring data import from a very old, R-Base 4 database, into SQL Server 2008. I know close to nothing about R-Base databases - is there any way to do this?

I have about a dozen servers, and I am looking to quickly find out all of the login/logout times, for a subset of users, for all servers, during January.

Is there a quick, easy way to get this information (faster and easier than manually combing through the security logs)?

I would rather not replicate any work - are there any publicly posted tools or scripts that already implement a solution to this problem?

I'm seeing spam in the mod_jk.log file, with the following error message: jk_connect.c (593): connect to 127.0.0.1:8009 failed (errno=61)

Tomcat is running properly, there are no firewalls configured between Apache and Tomcat (they are both running on the same machine), and there is a listener up on 8009. The connector runs properly for several days at a time, before starting to spam the log files with the above message, for any and all new connections.

Once the spam starts, the only way I've discovered to recover from it is to first restart Tomcat, and then restart Apache.

What are the most likely causes for this kind of problem?

If I have two accounts, where:

• both accounts have DBO level access (use the DBO schema to log in, and are part of the owner group)
• one of the accounts is listed as the "actual owner"
• both accounts are currently in use, and will continue to be in use, running long term (2+ hour) operations on the database
• I want to switch the "actual owner" from one account to the other

What kind of performance impact should I expect to see on the database?

I'm looking to test, on a large number of servers, whether or not the duplex settings on the network interfaces have been set up properly.

Is there a tool, or set of scripts, which I can run against the servers, to test their settings?

The servers in question are Windows 2003 and windows 2008 machines.

I'm looking for a method to, in real-time, automatically, adjust Resource Governor settings.

Here's an example:

Imagine that I have 10 applications, each hitting a different database on the same database machine. For normal operations, they do not hit the database very hard, so I might want each one to have 10% CPU power reserved.

Occasionally, though, one or two of them might spike, and run an operation which could really use the extra power to run faster. I'd like to be able to adjust to compensate (say, reducing the non-spiking apps to 3%, and splitting the difference between the spiking apps).

This is a kind of poor man's method of trying to dynamically adjust resource allocation and priorities.

Scripts (or something script-like) is preferred, since the requirement is for meta-level adjustments to be possible in real-time, also.

I have accidentally created a giant, unindexed, file on an NTFS system and I am trying to remove it.

CHKDSK appears to require the disk to be unmounted before the file can be reindexed (and eventually removed). Is there any way to achieve the same effect, without unmounting the disk?

I have a SQL Server database with multiple hundreds of data tables in it, and I am looking for disk usage statistics, as it relates to each individual table.

Is there a quick way to find this information?

I have a SQL Server 2008 database, up on an Enterprise Edition server. I am wondering if I can move it over to a standard enterprise edition server. Is there any way for me to test the database to see if this type of move is possible, before attempting it?

I would like to be able to use Google Desktop Search to search data that is stored on other computers, as well as my desktop - specifically, data that's stored on a Sharepoint installation on my network. Is it possible to get the Sharepoint install indexed?

Is it also possible to store this index in a central location, and share it with other people that may join the network?

Does anyone have detailed, step by step, instructions for extracting encryption keys from 509 certificates, and then storing them inside an encrypted jks file?

I am looking to install Arrial Narrow font definitions on a Windows Server 2003 machine. I believe the font definitions are distributed with Microsoft Office installations; I'd like to avoid purchasing and/or installing any of the Microsoft office software on the server.

Is there a legal, free way for me to install the fonts on there?

On a multi cpu, multi disk, server, I am looking to associate CPUs with particular log files.

I am wondering if is possible, and how, to dedicate CPU power to specific log file work, in SQL Server 2005.

I have a .Net application, compiled with the "Any" flag set for the architecture type.

I am wondering if it is possible to force the application to run as a 32 bit application, on a(any) 64 bit version of windows, without recompiling the application into a 32 bit executable.
